I think it goes like this
"doohickeys"=obsolete
"dingus"=new and improved

Thanks Sharky. At the moment there's nothing that I need in the way of parts. My post wasn't 'for me' as much as it was to get the group to dig through our collective brains for other interesting things. I do know that there are various items that are no longer available or are ridiculously over-priced. At the moment I cannot think of examples. Maybe when D.R or Jim B. wakes up in the morning...

I could throw out a couple of random ideas. But, none of them - I think - would offer the potential for a 500-1000 part run.

So Sharky...when you say you may be able ot produce the bolts for "waaaay" under $29 each, are we talking about $1 each? $5 each? $10 each? Just curious. I won't hold you to your answer since I know the production run total will affect the pricing.

Have never done a timing belt so fist one will be professionally, would it be prudent to have wrench replace "dinguses" if there is no sign of leakage yet.

Michael,
"If it ain't broke ... don't break it ...". From the commentary here, if replacement is attempted with S4 generation parts, there's a good chance of snapping off some of the existing '85 stand-off spacers: that would force pulling the engine = $$$$$$ - but it would really speed up the TB/WP job .
BTW, the latter is a good DIY project: read up .... save $1000+, welcome to the club!

Sharky,

Just for my own edification, what would it cost to CNC machine a set of wheels for a 928?

Out of a solid chunk? Each wheel would require a block like 20"x20"x12" (for 18"x10" wheels) which is almost 500lbs. So you would need a full ton of metal, which is going for about $2000 on the spot market for raw Aluminum (which is rather soft). To get the right alloy would probably be double that. Then the cutting begins...

Hehe, wheels huh? We *could* do it I think, but the bossman wouldn't even mess with it. It would be way to cost enefficient.

That guy with all the tatoos who's named after and outlaw and dating Sandra Bullock (what's up with that?) and that big guy who yells at his sons use a wheel blank like these:

There may be something similar for cars, but car wheels usually have a lot more dish (you probably want something other than zero offset) and the forces on a car wheel are much, much greater than a motorcycle. You can also machine the middle of a three piece wheel, but the same problems are there.

Ahhhh, lets just say that a CNC Machine Man can make anything you want to have made, including stuff you don't even know you want made and probably a lot of stuff you can't even believe could be made. And some stuff you don't want to know about.

My oldest brother Phil was a Chief Machinist Mate in the "old Navy". He was promoted to First Class at the age of 27 after he made a bunch of crankshafts for landing craft engines, at sea, enroute from Japan to Korea for the Inchon Landings.

Metal Man to the Helm!

Cheers!

Dave
