More than the $1995 price of a rebuilt unit from 928 International. I received a quote for $4K before calling them.

I removed the transmission myself, and an independent Porsche mechanic rebuilt it, and charged me for 4 hours of labour. Normally he would charge 5-7hrs, but since he quoted me 4 , he chose to stick to that. The parts were $300 ish (input bearing, 1st and 2nd syncros, cover plate, gasket set) and then the oil.

So, I came in significantly lower than $2k. More like $500. But if our gears are shot, it's a whole differendt story.

I suggest you drop the tranny yourself (pretty easy) and have it inspected before you decide what to do.

None of our rebuilds ever just need that parts you are planning on. Most needs sliders and dog teeth as well so make sure he inspect those while he is in there but it is rare to need new gears.

Syncro rings seem to cost much more than few year ago. Except maybe 4th and 5th on '87+ 5sp boxes. On '85 and newer total for 1st to 5th is way over $500, maybe close to $1K on those alone. Normally replacing just 1st and 2nd will do but I was hoping to change them all just to have 'new' tranny. Has anyone priced what all those small roller bearings in and around different shafts cost? Would like to renew them also if they're not $$$. About to do list of all 'wear items' inside '85 and '92 5sp's and hoping total isn't too much.

WOW, often it takes me 4 hours just to set the side to side on the r/p when we replace drive bearings! To inspect, measure and completely rebuild a gearbox in 4 or 7 hours is impressive!

My $4K quote included necessary replacement parts, 8 hours to pull and re-install the tranny and labor for the rebuild. Going with the 928 International tranny (which I lucked out to get a NEW one for the same price) ended up costing me ~$1,300 less. Plus, the forum guru Steve Cattaneo kindly spoke with my mechanic on the phone to make sure the procedure was done correctly (thanks again Steve).

How does the cost of rebuilding an automatic transmission differ from a manual one? Just curious...

Different parts=different costs. Gears and syncros in a manual gear box, clutch packs in an auto. Valve body in an auto, shifter forks and rods in a manual transmission. Closer inspection of parts is required during the rebuilding of automatic transmissions. The manual transmissions are pretty basic and easy, although the shims and adjusting depths are very critical.

Good luck!

I just paid a bit over $2000 + R&R to rebuild my "86.5 transmission. I decided against modifying the torque converter which would have added about $250, and stuck to factory specs. It had 160,000 miles on it and was slipping in the shift from 3rd to 4th, and also the reverse gear was getting harder and harder to engage. The shop said it was good that I did it now, rather than wait because parts were floating around in the trans and it would have been catastrophic had I waited much longer. I haven't driven the car yet. Maybe tomorrow if I get lucky I'll get it back. Hitchhiking is a drag and I am starting to become weary of it.

Like heart surgury, you want this done by someone who has done it a hundred times, not an intern. Get an exchange unit from 928 or one of the big guns in parts. The bonus is you will have it out and back in without waiting 4 months, only to find out that your unit was assembled in perpetual reverse. Ask me how I know.

If you own a 928, pull the tranny and have it inspected, and go from there.
If you consider buying a 928 with a bad tranny, calculate up to $2k.
