And yeah, I'd have a look at those calipers while you're at it. Something's definitely not right. Could be anything from excessive air in the system to frozen calipers to a horked mc.

Marc,

Definately check the pistons in the back calipers. I had one stick in the passenger side front caliper that boiled the brake fluid in four blocks and left me with zero brake pedal at the next red light. Scared the crap out of me. Even if your fronts are doing the lion's share of braking it ain't fun hitting the pedal and having it go to the floor and having to pump them up REAL fast with judicious use of the parking brake to avoid killing someone.

Good time to bleed out all the old fluid and get some new stuff in there too.

Regards,

Geoff,

I have just finished pulling the old pads out. They look fine, but something wasn't operating right. I removed the rust on the rotors with a light emery cloth scrub, and have hit all the sliding caliper frame surfaces with Optimoly HT. I was able to compress the pistons fairly easily with a clamp so they seem free. I am picking up the new pads from Devek (Great new place! - Whose white GTS were they working on? Gorgeous!) Friday morning, and will swap over to the Super blue when I bleed the brakes.

The brakes seemed solid enough. The inside of the rotors were polished as you would expect. The outers were only partially polished. It looked like they had sat out in the rain and rusted along the bottom on both wheels. In any case, 928s go fast enough that it's really important that you can stop them!

Oh, I forgot to ask - Is that a new 928? It looks like you sold the midnight blue shark, or at least gave it a really nice paint job.

If you have cleaned the rust of the rotors just drive the car and excercise the brakes once a week.

It definitely goes out once a week. I just have to work Garth's 80 mph reverse panic stop into my commute.

I sold the Blue shark to my unlce who is making it into a track car. Kinda a shame because it was such a pretty car. I got the new one with an auto as my commute is stop and go and I hurt my back.

I just put new brake pads in the rear and bled the brakes with the new super blue stuff. Optimoly HT on all moving surfaces (ok, not the face of the brake pads ) Even before fully bedding in the brake pads, the car is stopping better, and the rotors look nice and shiny.

Thanks for the advice. Now sweanders can't dis my rear rotors anymore!

Now that you're 100% mechanically sound again, 'splaine to me the " casablanca beige metallic"! Beige is good enough for membership in the exclusivity of the SBSC (shades of brown shark club) , but I never noticed that colour code in the WSM. The best I could find for '80 would be a 20/40/40 mix of cockney brown/cashmire beige/opal metallic! - but no casablanca .... Custom order perhaps?

Good going Marc! Sometimes the easy fixes can be the most satisfying.

Color code X4X4 from my "Certificate of Authenticity"
Signed and sealed by Richard S Ford, Vice President and COO, Porsche Cars North America, Inc.

Seeing as I paid about $80 for the bloody certificate, I now quote it as gospel :-)

The interior is plain old "Beige - Leatherette" (does that mean it comes from female cows?)
