Just remember that the aftermarket wheels for the earlier 928 models will not fit the airbag cars without other modifications. The only other wheel I know of that fits the airbag cars is the TechArt wheel, which costs around $1200 in the leather color of your choice.

Not you in particular, but some would rather buy the $600 Spanner diagnostic tester for only a few minutes of use, than to spend $1200 for something they would use all the time.
Each to his own.

But those few minutes could save you thousands :-)

Jim;
The airbags have a capacitor that holds charge for something like 3 minutes after you disconnect the battery. And I think it was DR or JB that said all airbag 928's use a 944/968 style wheel hub, so a smaller splined hub (ala 944, not 928) will work.
It is an easy job, to remove the airbag, couple 8mm bolts behind the wheeh and one wire holding the bag on. One big 22mm nut holding wheel to st. shaft...

So your saying if I bought the Spanner, I could save enough to buy that $1200 steering wheel too?... "But Honey, we can't afford to save that much".

Hi Borland,
>So your saying if I bought the Spanner, I could save enough to buy that $1200 steering wheel >too?... "But Honey, we can't afford to save that much".
Nothing in life is a sure thing, but I hear daily from guys that take their 928 to a shop and the mechanics supposedly spend days trying to find a problem. They then charge the owner for days of diagnostics that could have been found in minutes with the correct tool. Sometimes it is even worse as on top of this they spend even more of the owners money throwing new parts at a problem that they can't figure out. I have regularly heard of such bills that could buy 3 or 4 Spanners or 1 or 2 of those fancy steering wheels.

Makes you wonder why the Bosch Hammer failed to gain wide acceptance at most shops?
This RENNLIST thread pretty much covers why the Spanner isn't a replacement for good troubleshooting techniques:

Unfortunately some places don't make the investment they should to aid them in repairing cars efficiently. Another part of it is that the Hammer costs more than most shops pay for 2 lifts and only works for a select group of vehicles... so only the shops serious about those specific vehicles made the investment.

Opinions are like.. well you know... BUT if I was to ever take my 928 to a shop that didn't have Hammer, Spanner, or equivalent I would not consider them serious about their vocation. The Hammer (or Spanner etc) is a tool just like any other and there is no such thing a magic "one tool fixes all". It takes the combination of the proper tools and knowledge to repair a vehicle properly and efficiently.

The Hammer was only available to the Official Porsche dealers when it was new. This is the KTS301.
Lots of garages had the KTS300 with software and leads for other makes of car.
Porsche were very restricitve with the release of the Porsche specific sofitware modules and special (Porsche only) leads needed to diagnose Porsches. Both moduels and leads were very expensive, if you could persuade Porsche to sell you them.
As Dave says, even now, many garages are reluctant to pay out to buy proper diagnostic equipment. Then the customer will pay extra for wasted time and parts.
