Spare tire lockdown apparatus...

My 83 has the stamped washer with slotted hole and bolt. Wheel fits in tightly, with no chance of it rattling, but doesnt protrude up, or stop the cover from fitting flat. If it does sit high, I think it must be the wrong model???

Currently, there's a bolt and washer for sale on eBay.

It's from a 944, but will fit 83 up 928's if you invert the special washer and add a couple common flat washers. Eliminates the rattle with the S4's larger rim spare.

So the jack is supposed to fit behind the back cover? I have a signal triangle in their from a Tourist Delivery S4 so is that where the jack is supposed to fit?

That #@%!&#@$!***!!!! tow hook.......I finally just duct taped it to the plastic tool holder. I also carry a star lug wrench under the other side of the rear compartment under the foam padding.

The plate on ebay looks correct but the bolt is not. I'm sure it would work but if you are trying to keep it accurtate the bolt is a standard 10x45. You can find both in our online store by putting the word "Spare" in the search feature.

Mark,
Does the car's tool kit come with a socket wrench for that 10x45mm bolt?
That may qualify the 944 bolt solution as an upgrade since no wrench is needed.

It's been suggested that the spare 'fits' in the well better in some orientations than others. It may be that over time the tire expands where space permits, so you may have to try several times to find the best way to get it back in. I've always been able to get mine back in, but sometimes it hasn't been easy! I've taken to putting a chalk mark on the tire so I know how it was positioned before I took it out and that seems to work.

The spare must be face-down so it can bolt down there or the bolt won't reach. That makes it a concave area which will hold your things. The washer is expensive and the bolt is too. You can use any self-made one with a slot or a few holes. Personally I think the spare is of little value in our urban society. I'm considering removing mine. GTS uses a different spare from S4-.
I think Porsche mismanaged the space entirely back there. No spare would have been good and if you want one you can secure it in your hatch area. Second the fuel tank takes up more room than a couple of passengers, and that space might have been very useful for stowage or rear passenger room. Imagine that rear decklid lower by say one foot. NICE eh?

Mark Anderson....I'm curious about the possibility of a 78-86 spare being wider than the 87-95 spare, or visa versa. I ask you this, as you have access to the parts in question. Is there a chance that you can measure some samples?....tnx

Thanks Mark for the quick reply. That might account for part of the problem Anthony is having. One more quick question Mark if you don't mind...The lug nut wrench, what does it look like and do you have them in stock?...I don't think my 86.5 has one. It's a good thing I kept the jack from my 84 as well. I don't think I had a tire wrench in it either....tnx

I'm willing to bet I have a later model spare. Thanks for the info! I'll measure it and if so, will try to trade it out for the early one. It is in excellent condition otherwise.

I think we'd hate to read about some "freak accident" where someone got clobbered by their spare tire in an accident...the lock-down is there for a reason...loose CD jewel cases have turned into deadly projectiles....
