Rear Quarter Glass/Trim Removal

Default Rear Quarter Glass/Trim Removal

I wanted to get some feedback regarding the rear quarter glass and trim removal on an 84 S.

I will probably upgrade the 79 to a rear S wing with the parts I grab off this car (another story all together) The trim and glass are in very good condition. I don't want to bugger up the trim, don't care about the seals as I'll eventually replace those. Any tricks, timesavers, or advice on removing would be great!
I read Chris Ford's website and it sounds like you want to push from the inside to break the seal?

The trim pieces are mega expensive - ask me how I know.
Treat them like gold dust.
When you have learned what to do come and do mine on the S4.

Roger, define mega expansive ? Probably $60-$80 a window for (plastic) trim, the seal is ~$200.

Chuck, If the trim is in great condition i'd remove the trim/glass/seal together and then remove the trim with the whole assembly on the bench. There are some tips on getting it all back together on Nichol's site.

You'll be surprised how easy it comes out, probably a nother set of hands useful, one pushing on the glass from the inside while another gently persuades the seal over the lip of the body.

On the S4 it is metal (aluminium?) and the small top corner piece (928 543 413 04) cost $40.
Extrapolating would mean the whole set of trim could be $200 to $300.
Where do you buy yours?

Just checked 928 specialists site and you are right they are a lot cheaper than where I am.
I bought mine from 928 Int. Need to call Jim/Tom and find out why so expensive.

These are the part numbers I have
928 543 419 10
928 543 420 10
928 543 417 10
928 543 418 10
928 543 413 04
928 543 415 05
928intl are a little more expensive .. not much. I believe those numbers are for plastic except the corner trim. I havn't bought mine yet ...

Got a lot of things to do before I get around to that. Trying to 'stage' the expenses.

Its $16 on 928 Spec and (I checked the invoice) $38 from 928 Int.
I am just curious about the more than 100% price difference.
Always get great service and prices from 928 Int.
So this one piece is metal and all the rest are plastic?

You have to take the glass and trim out together. From inside the car at the front edge, carefully roll the seal back until you can get a wire pushed through to the outside. Tie chord (nylon works great) and pull it through until you can grip it on both sides. Use something to lube the string to prevent cutting the seal. I used sylglide, but vaseline would probably work great. Now, curl the seal on the inside so that when you slide/pull the chord, the seal folds to the ouside of the opening. Be careful because it's fairly easy to cut into the rubber instead of rolling it outside. Once you get across the bottom of the glass, it will stick out and away from the opening and you can grip it enough to wiggle the rest of the assembly out of the opening.

Installation works the same way. Hope that helps.

I tried the string method but it wouldn't pass through the sealant, don't know what they used but that stuff sure adhered well. However, going back in I plan to do a reversal of what you described.

Anyone got any advice for what sealant to use ? Do you need to put any where the glass sits in the seal or just the body against the seal ?

Roger, Yup, the trip is super expensive. That's why I want these. The car had 59K on it and looks like it sat in a garage for a long time! The trim, glass, and panels(interior) are all in great shape. The paint shines like crazy and she's an 84!!! I'll let you know how it goes. I may go over there next Sat. Interested in coming??? Let me know.

Chuck,

When I painted the '81, we removed the aluminum trim by gently pulling its off the rubber seal. The alum. trim mates to the trim via a channel. The alum. pulls off easily by using a very small screwdriver.

To remove the rubber, simply use a box cutter and cut the rubber out. The adhesive will need some cleanup but no big problem.

So...... Did you buy a parts car?

Bring Roger along my shop is not as nice as his though I hope he doesnt laugh at it . Let me know if you are coming I may have some stuff going on for Special Olympics in the AM.

Is this the best way to do this? Anyone have any other tips? Is it possible to do this without damaging the seal so it can be reused?

I left all the exterior trim on except the corners..

i used a very strong zip tie. Its flat, strong and wont break. It cut through the sealant easily. I started by pushing it through the top corner by the B pillar and worked my way down ..did the same along the top also. After that it was just a process of prying the the lip up, pushing the glass out and the rubber over the lip ...repeat a few inches at a time starting from that upper corner. Eventually you can pull the whole assembly forward and out. Id definitely recommend going down a good length of the seal with the zip tie , cord..or what ever you choose to break the bond the sealant has.

had them both out in about 40 ish minutes. My interior is gutted so that was a nice luxury to work with.

Btw, I just had a flashback on your car.
Weren’t you showing me (at a Devek Days event long ago) that one of the doors on your S4 had been replaced w an OB door?
you showed me the speaker indention (early model different than later model) that indicated this. I may be going crazy, maybe I dreamed it, who knows. Also, did you have an identical Silver S4 before this one? Sorry to go off tangent, the years and beers may have not been good to my memory... lol!
