Need a diagnosis on a 79 that won't start.
I've got a 79 that suddenly stopped. So I instinctively bypassed the fuel pump relay. And happily I could hear the pump running again. BUT, the car still won't start. Does anyone have some experience with this situation? I would spend more time on it, except I'm moving and caring for an injured cat. All will be well, I think, but I need a bit of forum support to get this car moving again.

Crank no start? Or no crank?

Wow, nice avatar.
It cranks. Cranks like a beast! And I'm guessing there's no spark. I guess that's pretty obvious. If it had a spark, it'd be starting. Not sure what to do next.

After a tank-ectomy on mine it took FOREVER cranking to get fuel through the system (CIS) and start again. I would leave the pump bridged for a good period. Check by cracking open a connection up front (WUR inlet) that you have pressure up there. Tried pumping the throttle to get some air flow?
Come back with more details of behaviour, presence of spark etc

jp,
I have run the pump for several minutes and that didn't get it going.
The question is- what are the causes of no spark. I mean this isn't my 55 Chevy anymore. We've got black boxes.
I'm only doing this because I just sold the stinking car, and immediately it craps out on the new owner. IN MY DRIVEWAY! I guess it's one last attempt to get me to fix it.

I've heard about the green wire. The almighty green wire.
Is it in the engine compartment?
I hate to be so ignorant sounding, but .....What about the green wire? Ok, I'll shut up and go out in the freezing cold, and look for a green wire. Yes master, I'll go into the unknown, in search for that green wire. I trust I will be guided. I trust that I will know what to do with the wire when I find it.

The green wire plugs into the distributor and runs across the front of the engine. It may not be green anymore. It's a special wire that you're not going to be able to fab up a proper replacement for. If you're having the same problem with it that I did, you may be able to just move it around and get the car to run... mine was shorting against the cam tower.

The green wire appears to be perfect. I'm having a hard time believing that the fuel solenoid AND something else would have problems at the same time. But a new solinoid isn't getting the car to fire up.
I'd check for spark, but I'm alone. Hmmmmmmmmmm. Life presents these little practice drills for a reason. I'm looking for the reason...
Well here's a little story that might relate to this forum. I bought some property in Oregon, where I'm moving. And this week when I went back, some very nice person had dumped two tires in my creek. Two tires that weigh 1000 pounds each! I got a bit disappointed for a bit. But in my search for places that dispose of tires, I ran into someone who just bought a race track in Coos Bay. And not only does he want the tires, but I now have a place to go zoom around in my GT. YAY!
OK, back to work.

That's pretty cool. I like the other one too. The adjustable gap tester.
Unfortunately, I'm craning machines onto my trailer, and I'm outta here in the morning. So unless I get it running very soon, the new owner gets to tow it away and deal with it. I'm just trying to be helpful. But, it looks doubtful.
I'm affraid if there's no spark, it means the black box is dead. I guess I'm at the mercy of you good folks on the forum. It's kinda hard to be moving machines and fixing a car at the same time. But it sure is fun!
And thanks guys, for your help.

Brendan,
Thanks for the offer. That's really kind.
I probably can't diagnose the problem before I leave. I'm outta here tomorrow. Can you PM me with your info so I can get in touch with you? I''ll be shutting down the computer momentarily. It's back to the dark ages for a few days.

Gregg, did you check voltage on the resitors in right side front engineroom, they need the full voltage to deliver the 9 volt to the ignition (I'm not sure, but I think the english word for it is "coil"). I had simular problem - especially if it was cold, crank turning, turning, turning.....................no fire !
