I'm not at home and won't be 'til new year but from memory red starts at 6400 S4, 6600 GT. the spec sheet says the GT rev limiter is set to 6800. Maybe someone else can confirm.

Colin, didn't meant to. At least not to shoot the parachute
I thought I had picture of 6800 tach but can't find it. Either way redline is higher than S4 and this should be easy to notice.

Race Car
End of story here:

So, this car was an early Japanese manual LHD 1988 S4 with three options:
M220: Locking differential
M474: Sport shock absorbers
I567: Windshield tinted, upper part
You will notice that the M418, protective side moldings, are not listed, because they were a regular item for a RoW or Japanese car in 1988, contrary to the US cars.
Engine number M28/41 81J 00160
Gearbox number G28/12 2J 10547
And this is the only manual delivered in Japan for the 1988 MY.
It can't be a production CS for many reasons:
- The VIN is not into the specific serial number range.
- This car doesn't have some equipment codes: I393 (CS Design rims) I637 (CS)
- The gearbox is not a G28/55. I don't trust the PET 100% about the gearbox number and type (All the SEs are indicated with G28/12 instead of G28/55, by example), but I do in this case. The G258/55 2J 10547 was fitted to one of the last SEs.
It seems to have a GT engine with compressor now.
Interesting car, anyway.
