As you know, we cannot track the 5-digit numbers - we have never found any info on what these are. They could be packages of options, or special country equipment - we just don't know at this point. I don't have 718, XY-5 is Frame of automatic gear lever covered in leather.

I tried using the http://www.kindel.com/Porsche/options.asp but it didn't work!
However 701 and 719 seem to apply to slant nose conversions? Maybe 718 is similar?

718 is model year change in VIN:
718 R program VIN change for May 1993 models for USA / Canada only
718 S program VIN change
My conclusion of the above is that 718 means cars VIN is one year younger than what other cars made at the time were. As an example, if car has P as 10th digit in VIN and option 718 it was done during time when N was used on all non 718 cars. P instead of N is what US early '93 GTS got and I think they all should have 718 option also.
WP0AA292_PS815001 -> 149 early '93 GTS made between late winter/early spring 92 -> 08/92
WP0AA292_PS820001 -> 680 late or more precisely normal '93 GTS made between 09/92 -> 08/93
Why would Porsche do that instead of just using N like in Euro models? All I can think of is they didn't want to bring in N-cars for some legislative reason. Maybe they would have needed some type approval process done twice if they would have used both N and P. Perhaps it was easier to get paperwork in order for next model year too by using P some months early.
For 09981 and 10021 check the archives. There's some speculation on them being factory hitch and/or phone.

Thank you guys for all the help. Indeed Nicole, the selector lever and console frame are clad in leather. Does this also apply to the ashtray? If not, we may have just found option code 09981 or 10021. Thanks Vilhuer for the 718 code. Yes, it is an early production '93 so that one is settled.
My speculation for the remainingly undetermined 09981 or 10021 is that one must stand for the "overpriced" option.
