Water in rear seat floor- any leak finding hints?
I discovered a fair amount of water in the floor of the right rear seat. The dampness of the carpets stops as it runs up the sides of the tunnel or door ledge. I've removed the flat carpet panel until I can find the source.
Yeah, I know the usual method of finding leaks, get in the car and have your helper hose down the suspected area. No results.
The seats are dry in all areas. The headliner and sunroof(which has never moved in my custody) all are dry and show no signs of having leaked.
I looked the top rear corner of the door, where the drip rail meets. The door seal is a bit stiff from age but otherwise sound and uncracked. I could find no signs inside the car at any point that water has gained entry, other than the water in the floor.
There doesn't seem to be any unsealed holes in the floor beneath the seat, which wouldn't have surprised me if there had been. This car is a salvaged wreck(says Alaskan DMV) and the collective opinion of my mechanic and I is that the right front of the car made heavy contact with something and the right door and fender are replacements.
So it could be about anything, but I'd like to hear from others about common leaks. It must happen to others, the only other 928 in my town has a small tarp covering the roof area, just like I now have. But she works odd hours and I haven't been able to chat her up on the subject yet.

Hose it down a lot from the top and then check the sunroof motor access cover. With worn sunroof seals and plugged drain holes, the water goes to lowest place. In my case, it's the sunroof motor cover. When I go around a corner after being in the rain, the water sloshes over the edge onto the rear seats and carpet.

Where I park is slightly nose up. And being as the wetness was in the right rear floorboard I didn't find it immediately. I've been drying it out as well as placing a small tarp over the roof area. But I have been driving it (regardless of weather) so I'm not surprised that my progress in this matter is slow. Which is to say it remains inordinately damp in that spot.
It just sucks to park it and the windows fog up instantly. It's supposed to be dry for a couple of days so hopefully I can find the culprit. I have as much confidence in that likelihood as I do in the weather report...thanks for the input.

If you are parked nose up like I was...I can tell you what happened to me was the same. I had standing water in both rear foot wells and no sign of were it came in from. Greg at Precision Motorwerks found that the fresh air intake for the heater/air con on 928s has a small lip that keeps water from going into the opening. When the car is on a incline nose up the water runs down the hood and down the windshield and collects in the wiper cavity...were the fresh air intake is. Water overcomes the small lip and runs down the intake, behind the fuse panel, under the carpet and seats and ends up in the rear foot wells. Good luck.

What about the plastic cover that snaps in on the bottom of the rear footwell. (Where the DEVEK Rollcage bolts through the floor) Now, on your car you don't claim to have a cage, but as the car was hit, it may have popped the plastci bit out enough to no longer make it water tight. As you drive in all kinds of weather, some water could easily get into the car from this area..

ixnay on the archarodonicay, okay?
Went around the rear hatch, quarter window, sunroof hatch. No signs of water coming in. The panel on which the rear visors mount is a bit wrinkled, but not water damaged.
heinrich, the lower window exterior seal? So, the water would be coming inside the door and out through a drain hole and then into the car instead of onto the door sill and outside? The wet spot is strictly in the floor. But the door seal is pretty dodgy. The door panel seems to have been retained from the wreck. It's got a big wonk inward right in the middle that won't quite pull in with the push plugs... But how water could get from the door without shown evidence of it doesn't jive with my observations.
Thanks for the help, I'll update soon
I'm going to investigate B.Beast's theory tomorrow.

Alex, I have found many (944; 911 and 928) doors let water in in some way and door water always ends up right there. In the passenger rear footwell. If your car is ever parked on a sideways incline, water runs in toward the interior from outside. If it's parked level, water passes the door or window seals and makes its way onto the inside of the interior door panel, and from there it is a simple straight path down to the footwell, since that panel overhangs all seals.
