Default OB steering rack won't fit in S4 x-member?

In my continuing reassembly of my OB track car, I've come across yet another potential incompatibility. Just checking for verification.
I installed an S4 X-member in preparation for dropping in the 5L, and when I went to bolt up the rack it didn't sit flush inside. As usual, pressed for time so I didn't get a chance to disassemble and ponder because I had to leave.
Anyone else come across this situation? Do I now need a later model rack to properly fit inside the cross member?

You could have just drilled holes in your early cross member to put in the later style motor mounts.

I've never come across that before. How far off are the mounting holes?

Also, install the engine before the rack so that you can leave the lower MM nuts loose. It makes the install WAY easier

Have you done this? When I had them side by side it didn't look like that would work but it's good to know that I have that option.

The holes line up, but it feels as if something on the top of the rack is preventing it from seating completely up into the cross member. The top of the rack had a soft line going across the top that I don't recall seeing on the S4 racks, I'm wondering if the fittings on either end of the soft line are protruding upward enough to cause the interference?

Oh, and roger on installing the rack after the mounts, I was just doing a test fit because I didn't want any surprises when the engine goes in. Well, surprise !

Adam, you're welcome to my S4 rack Thomas helped pull. Would need a rebuild but have the Rennbay seal kit.

Got a rebuilt rack so don't really need two.

Well, I wouldn't say it CAN'T be done, but if it makes sense to do so is another question - there is definitely some "remodeling" of the metal necessary, aside from the drilling. I have some side-by-side comparison pics if anyone is interested.

Adam, are you using the Volvo motor mounts? Possible that the lower studs on the mounts are too long and interfering with the rack?

The comment was to "just drill" it.

Just drilling doesn't equate to cutting, hammering and welding.

I had that problem when I swapped out mine for the later model and motor mounts.

I had to get the hacksaw out and cut a bit off the lower studs.

Other than that, no problem.

It's likely hitting the stud on the MM,
Probably just need a little trim.
