Nicely done!

For your information, the 377/378 (Combination seats) were used only for 6 of the 7 1989 928 S4 CS.
What it funny is that my former one has this code, but regular electric seats. I wonder if they were changed after delivery.

Also, the M637 was used for both 1988 and 1989 928 S4 CS.

Thank you for the tips, I have updated it in our club's list.

I have read about it somewhere but never have seen an actual model with this option.
How does this level control system work?

When Rob ran the VIN for me, it showed up. Lots of speculation from folks on here as to what it might be. My car is a US model, so we ruled out level control for the headlights (which I don't have the mechanism or switch for). The 'Best Guess' was that it was adjustable shocks on the front - believe it became standard in 1984. Apparently it was only on North American versions and only in 1983. I am not really sure what that would look like on this particular car, but will be glad to check if someone can explain it to me.

When I saw this thread I just wondered if Nicole's contact had ever come across it before and could shed some light.

I have just discovered the real meaning of the equipment code 673, "Prepared for lead sealed odometer".

According to the Porsche 1988 technical booklet, this means that the car is prepared for rental without driver. This means that the odometer is checked for accuracy and then sealed on many points.

This applies to 33 928s:
- 1 1988 manual S4
- 30 1988 to 1991 automatic S4s
- 2 1992 GTSs.
All of them were delivered in Germany.

I guess that this maybe was a service of the factory.

Samuel,

I have a 94 GTS with I740 which means "Exhibition". There are 41 other cars in the database with I740. It also has 09991 and 28 other option codes, so it was pulled from the assembly line and sent to the "Exclusive" department. Beyond that, I can not find anything besides the fact that it is the only car built for both Canada and the U.S. that make it a separate "Exhibition" model in the database. When I tried to put it into the 928 Registry it came up with this:

Have you found any I740's over in France or Europe?

- WP0AA292_PS820092: Canadian automatic

- WP0AA292_RS820102: Canadian automatic
- WP0AA292_RS820107: Canadian automatic

Samuel,

Thank you for identifying that there are 5 USA+CAN Exhibition cars. This raises a couple of observations regarding Canadian vs U.S. specification Exhibition cars and my apparently unique U.S./Canada combined Exhibition car.

1. Cars built for Canada have their gauges displayed exclusively in Metric units and are initially identified as U.S. cars. Only after inspecting the cars individual build sheet does one find the "Canada" designation (option M113).

2. The total cars with the M553 U.S./Canada and/or M113 Canada option does not add up to the displayed total in the compilation of the "Vin Decoder Specs" that accompany options specific to each car in the 928 Owners club registry (there is one USA, Canada car, one USA car and three Canada exhibition cars in North America. Not a big deal but worth noting as something to follow up on over time.

Note: I have gone through every 1993 - 1995 GTS serial number manually in the 928 Owners Club Registry and found the following entries for six "Exhibition" cars in the registry. They are the five you listed plus one ROW car from Scotland. I hope that over time, more "Exhibition" cars are identified and documented.

Below I have captured the instrument panels of 4 of the 6 Exhibition cars in the 928 OC Registry. Check out the individual speedometer faces and observe the differences:

1993 Exhibition GTS's:

1. WP0AA2927PS820088 (Canada) - Automatic in Midnight Blue
(No photos available)

2. WP0AA2929PS820092 (Canada) - Automatic in Polar Silver (below photo from registry shown instruments in Kilometers only.)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1994 Late production GTS's:
3. WP0AA2920RS820100 (USA) - 5 Speed in Polar silver (below photo from registry shows instruments only in miles)
4. WP0AA2924RS820102 (USA, Canada) - Notice the dual scales of Kms and Miles? Automatic in Grand Prix White (my car which has M553 is U.S./Canada). (Below photo shows dual scales with both miles and kilometers displayed.)
5. WP0AA2923RS820107 (Canada) - Automatic in Polar Silver. (Below photo from registry shows instruments in Kilometers only)
6. WP0ZZZ92ZRS800087 ROW (Scotland) - Automatic in black.
(No photos of instruments.)
So we know this is a separate "Model" but exactly what else is different about (I740 - "Exhibition")?
Hi Samuel- I see in the interior shot of this '89S4 ( WP0ZZZ92ZKS841569) that it has the cassette storage boxes on the parcel shelf. Which is listed as XR8 in the option lists, but I wonder if maybe a mistake was made? THere's only 1 car that has the XR8 option, a German '91 GT, pics of which I cannot find.
Rob - The cassette storage box on the parcel shelf is something I have seen before. It seems to unfortunately contradict the possibility that XR8 (Parcel shelf cassette box) is in only one car? Perhaps it suggests that XR8 remains undefined? Perhaps these are different Cassette holders? As I count, the above car has four rows of cassettes, the white Exclusive car below has only three...
Hope this helps...
