Hm... bad relay?
My car has a gremlin. Surprise, surprise.
Sometimes my power wondows and sunroof work when there's no key in the ignition. I suspect they shouldn't. No other accessories do this. Sometimes, they only work when the key is in and turned a notch or 2. I suspect this is the correct config. So: something is intermittently allowing power to the windows and sunroof. Relay? Ignition switch? Other? I've pored over some diagrams, none the wiser... :surr: |
From the 1984 (S2) model the windows works when one of the doors are open

From the 1985 Service Information Booklet W K D 491 721:
Power Windows USA cars have a power window circuit which is activated via a special relay (VI - yellow print) . Power window motors can still be operated after turning off the ignition and closing the doors . This operation however is stopped when a door is opened . Power window motors can then be operated as required only after turning on the X contact or ignition . In R . o. W. cars the windows can be operated with the doors open (no change in comparison to 1984 models) . In perhaps a bit plainer English: For USA cars after 1985, you can operate the windows and sunroof after you turn the ignition switch off - until you open a door. For R.o.W cars, you can operate the windows even after you open a door. If your windows will work on a USA car with a door open: - You may have a bad door switch (the system doesn't know a door is open). - A relay may be sticking shut (Relay X - I think) - Someone has changed the wiring. |
Thanks Wally. I'll investigate all of the above.
