Hey, doesn't "Jersey Joe" have a '90 928 GT for sale down there? That would be one to look at.
My personal opinion 928 vs. 944: 928s were twice the money when new for a good reason, there's so much more build quality and design there. 944 a sports car, 928 a supercar.

Hey thanks everyone I GREATLY appreciate it. I think I'll stick with the original plan of my first P-car being the 951. I already told my husband, plan on me owning several P-cars in the coming years. Of course he wants to start collecting antique fire engines, so I shouldn't have any problems in that arena!
You guys are wonderful as sounding boards for ideas. Thank you again!

Melissa, I own both (a 944 Turbo and a 928s). I ahve also driven numerous examples of each. They are very different cars and I recommend having a look at both - by what YOU prefer. They are not directly comparable.
As someone said the difference is the consideration of whether you want a a pure sports car vs a GT. I love the torque and easy way the 928 pulls around at low rpm, which is great for stop start driving. Whereas once you are on the freeway or there is an opportunity to let the car stretch its legs, a 944 is great - especially one with a turbo. A 944 also out handles a 928, so your driving style will also be an issue too.
What type of 944 are you thinking? Overall unless you are thinking 944 s2 or Turbo, I would probably go 928. But then performance is m biggest issue.
In terms of running costs, the maintenance seems to be fairly similiar, but my 944 Turbo has probably given me less hassle overall. Personally a low revving V8 should give less trouble you would think, but the ancillary parts of a 928 are more prone to wear due to its complexity and larger size.
One last thing to keep in mind. The 928 was the flagship of the Porsche range and I would be inclined to expect that and the fact there are much less of them overall compared to 928s may mean higher service costs, not to mention higher fuel bills of course.
If you have any specific questions, please feel free to email me: brett@graduate.uwa.edu.au
Good luck with your search - either way I think you'll love your car.

Well I would agree that a 928 is GT car and 944/951 is sports car. 928 has more comfort, but at the expense of more weight. A 928 can be driven anywhere a 944 can, but does not like to be tossed in corners as much as a 944. However you get more comfort in 928 than you can in 944.
My parents have 91 928S4. I took it on a long (700 mile) Porsche club drive. Very comfortable and handle well even on 60+ mile section of tight twisty mountain road. The torque was nice as compared to by 944 Turbo S. I have done that drive in my 951 and it more sporting in the 951, but a little more comfortable in 928 especially in the straighter sections. Very different feel from each car. With respect to power the 944 Turbo S and the 928 S4 are similar. The turbo S's 250 hp is lower than the S4's 316, but with less weight and 5 speeds vs 4 spd auto they feel quite similar. The difference is the 951 is more raw in terms of more tossable, but in general slightly stiffer ride and less comfort features. The 928 is a little more bulky, but delivers superior comfort.
For me I am happy with the more raw feeling of my 944 Turbo S.
The 944 NA is different animal. Mechanicaly very similar to th 951, but with less hp you drive it differently. The 944 NA lives for corners and hates straight aways. The 951 is happy in both. The 951 in general is bit heavier than a 944 NA, but only in a subtle way. The 951 needs to run fast to feel satisfying. Not because it can't go slow, but because it feels so much better when you lean on it a little both in corners in and straights. That feeling of boost can get addicting. The 944 NA is comfortable in easy driving since there is much less reward for straight away blasts. Then again "blasting down a straight" is a relavive term in 944 NA. Unfortunalty mini-vans can blast right right along with you when the road is straight. In corner is it another matter as the 944 NA brings great joy to any driver. I am actually very happy daily driving my 944 NA and would be frustrated doing the same with my 951. A 928 would also make fine daily driver, but has two drawbacks. Firstly it does have speed rush and likes to go fast, something it is hard to do on the way to work. Really the 300+ hp is just a waste in traffic. Plus I get 25 mpg using 87 oct gas in my 944. Hard to do that in a 928.
So the right car for you depends on your needs and what you value. Both can be excellent cars or maintence nigthmares.

Melissa,
928 is by far the better choice, but, try to buy from the original owner and service records! Flush all fluids first. Take to a certified Porsche shop first if possible. Low miles and make sure that the Timing belt has been changed!!!! Get the Workshop Manuals and read them. My only problems have been Rear hatch , Dome Lights grounding out, and Rear wiper problems. Mine is a sunday driver only. A few slight oil leaks. People always give it a second look and wonder what it is.
