Nicole you know you're right on this one!
At the same time...more than one person on here has removed his cats and STILL passed California's difficult emmisions regulations. "Difficult"? YES...they are stringent...but I still realize that they are not completely real-world. For the past year I have been driving my Austrian 928S2 without the cats THAT I INSTALLED...after one of them was essentially destroyed by a rich running situation. The difference in the way the car ran was phenomenal- it really was night and day. For kicks, I did exactly what has been depicted here: I put the garden hose down both pipes on the removed cats just to see what would happen. The right cat flowed free; the left side filled and took a few seconds more to drain. I guess something melted and it created a problem.
As per the local pressure-head hero "Lagavulin", the ZO6 people are mounting a set of high flow cats that cost you nothing horsepower-wise up the the 600 hp region. I'd be quite happy to mount a pair of said parts if they didn't cost over $500 each....
-I'll figure out my cat problem eventually. Stay tuned...

CA smog tests nowadays include a visual inspection - at least I've seen this around here. Unless the mechanic is dishonest or lazy, it is easy to tell, if cats are in place. Of course they could be gutted...

Nicole, I just had my car inspected and the visual was a 3 second look under the hood. Guess he was lazy or just figured if I unhooked anything it likely wouldnt pass and I would be coming back. Cats would have to be pretty backed up to affect performance. Had a 79 merc capri that had a plugged convertor. In the end car stalled twenty times, (kept starting & driving, didnt know any better) By the time I got home the exhaust manifold was glowing red. I agree with you. Leave em on unless you have a track car.

Californa is not the same as new mexico! I have a perfectly fine enviroment to pollute here. I need to get started on it right away i think ill go drive right now.
Look you tell me dont take the cat off nicole, because its bad. My 20yr old cat is clogged and leaking and generating heat under the car. I dont have 350$+ for a new high flow cat. Come on. I remove it, it adds power, that i can feel. The heat goes away under the car. All in all i say its better.
If I had 350$ i would save another 350$ and buy me some headers!

Maybe a 928 isn't the right car for you, if you can't keep it up...

Nicole, I know where you coming from, but my 1981 factory CATS are not doing much, I'm pretty sure they are clogged. I'm down 20+ RWHP per my last dyno, that is the only part of the car that has not been tested. There is no way I'm paying the money to buy a set of new cats for a 20+ year old car I usually only drive on the track (well, next year that is) not to mention racing fuel and CATS do NOT get along very well.
Also my feelings on car exhaust, when you can get every bus, dump truck, city vehicle etc.....to stop pouring black smoke out of their pipe's, I'll start worrying about my car. Start with the big offenders first and get more accomplished.

Hacker,
If your factory cat is bad it can cause huge power loss.
When i bought the '80 I have it was a little weak above 4500 rpms. I drve it a few hundred miles then let sit about 3 weeks. The condition was worse when I started it up again. The car would not even rev above 4500rpms. After it sat a few more weeks the car wouldn't rev at all and developed a horrible rattling sound under the car. I removed the cats and pieces of the substrate fell out. The cats were so Bad I couldn't even drive the car. I roded them out to see if they were indeed the problem. The difference was incredible. The car would now rev to 7krps and felt much, much more powerful than when I first bought it. I'll soon replace the cat with some of the units from Random Technologies.

So a 928 isnt the right kind of car for me because i dont want to put new cats on it? Right... Im putting headers on it when i get some extra cash with no cats.. If your so enviromentaly concerned you should drive an electric car.

I see Nicole's point, but I am not sure it always has to be that way. My NSX has no cats, but meets the pollution requirements and passes the emissions test no problem. Why is that? Now technically it's illegal because the cats have to be there, but I've never had an inspection station look under the car. So if I am meeting the clean air requirements, what difference does it make if the cats are there? On a clean running 928, if you remove the cats, how much does that throw off the emissions level? Anyone ever measure it?
