Figured I'd throw this out there as I could not find any info. on the forum regarding this. For those that want to add an aftermarket shifter handle to their 928, Wailtail.com sells 2 options for us for $39.99. I went with the red stitching model so I could match my Coco mats. It's subtle but tasteful. It's a very simple install. Simply slip it over the shift lever and tighten the 3 small Allen head screws. It may loosen after a few months of driving but takes 20sec to retighten. I've had mine 5 months or so without issue. I'm guessing it's not real leather but looks like it.
For what it's worth I'm on my second one and the leather doesn't hold up amazingly well, but they look good so I bought an extra as a spare.
Maybe, not sure. Did the mechanical portion of your's fail or did the leather wear quickly? I've had no issue with either other than 1 time having to tighten screws.

FWIW I had Brian Wasinger recover my 84 shifter handle it came out great.
NOTE if your handle is cracked you can repair it with 3M epoxy 08223 for plastics, or you can try JB weld for plastics,
this should restore its function,
the screw holes can be remachined in the handle,
a drill press is idea for this

I’d love to have my original wrapped in black leather w/ red stitching if possible. My original is in perfect shape, just looks so boring that’s all.
The handle on my red car has cracked and I have tried to glue it.
Found this repair kit from a company in Holland.
Anyone with experience? Is it something worth investing in? The price is low.
