Horizontal slack on left rear wheel
Hi Guys,
928s Euro 1983
After a tranmission revision ( I wasn't there when it was done or when everything got bolted back in ) I have driven around 40 miles with my car and noticed a clunking sound coming from my left rear wheel whenever I would turn/steer the car ( especially on roundabouts ).
I jacked up the car and noticed there is a lot of horizontal slack (see movies). I haven't had time to dive in deeper yet, as office duty calls, but Iin the meantime I was wondering if anybody could help me diagnose this problem before I go replacing the wheel bearing etc etc.
As said above: the is only slack moving the wheel horizontally, from left to right. There is no slack from right to left. There is no vertical slack. I did not hear anything grinding or whatever bearring sound prior to the point when it started 'clunking'.
Thank you!

Check the bolts that hold the rear suspension to the body and to the transmission.(including the shock tower bolts inside the rear hatch) The rear suspension is usually totally removed during a transmission replacement and its very possible that one or some of those didnt get tightened. The axle nut should be torqued to somewhere around 315 ft lbs (sorry, from memory) so check that as well.

I will guess that one of the beveled washers has fallen out when the pins for the rear shocks were installed.
this will let the wheel move on the lower shock pin.
NOTE its also wise to replace the upper control arm bushings then have the car aligned
NOTE the eccentric adjuster at the cross member to LCA get torqued to 140 ft lbs these are usually loose from a bad alignment

It does appear that there is rotation in the movement of that rear wheel, but I didn't see where you said anything about replacing the rear shocks. But I agree with MrMerlin that the movement you are experiencing is very consistent with his diagnosis.
Correcting that movement will make a massive difference in how your 928 handles.
Keep us posted.

NOTE its possible to see if the washer is missing,
you need to look at the hub carrier from the bottom,
you will be able to see a gap,
and compare it to the other side.
To confirm the play,
use a prybar inserted into the hub

Hey Guys,
Thnx for the incredibly fast responses, I love this forum and its members.
As far as my problems goes: I took the time to go and check the issue and sure enough, after exactly 10 seconds I found the problem and I was rather shocked... The lock nut of the lower control arm is not fastened AT ALL...... even worse, I went to the right rear wheel to inspect what it should look like ( this is not the wheel that was making any sound ) and the locking nut and the underlying big ring are totally missing! I am not 100% sure it was my transmission guy who did this so I am not pointing fingers but jeez... I added a video to show it.
Sometimes things are just really simple and stupid I guess.... I ordered 2 new lock nuts and that O ring from Rosepassion and will torque it up to specs.
Again, thank you!!
