Yes the first thing to check / fix
Yes the first thing to check / fix
Plan is to do all the small things and check / verify all the major things bit by bit, but along the regular use of the car.
otherwise I end up with a year or more of the car out of Service, and this is not why I bought it.

Hi Konrad,
Congratulations on your purchase of such a handsome example of a 928 GTS.
I will echo what Mr. Merlin suggests about doing a crankshaft end play check sooner than later since this is an automatic equipped 928. This procedure is actually simple to do and will yield you some great information about your engine's health going forward.
Obviously you have the means to support this 928 in your ownership. This procedure wouldn't be expensive to do by a competent shop next tme it is on a lift for some other service.
Enjoy your new purchase and please share your experiences, I am envious!
Cheers,
Constantine

So here’s the radio. Found a one that was half the price of the linked one but instead of a faulty tape drive it has BT and handsfree (with external mic).
I do agree to check the tension plate play / pinch bolts - checked what the process is and it shouldn’t be a much of a hassle compared to where I am already… the tranny had maintenance works done few thousands km ago, so worth checking how good these guys were when removing and reinstalling it.
Also waiting for a spare (blank?) Key from Porsche. They said they won’t sell me 928 Key without a VIN. I wonder if this will come as blank or as a VIN-matched Key.
As of my experience so far. Out of about 20 bolts 3 were completely stuck (head broke - sorry not a native, not sure what the correct word for that is :-)) and needed drilling out and tapping (I did helicoil inserts where it was in aluminium parts). Not that bad ha ha.
Brakes (oh those old Brembos) had one of the pads seized in each caliper due to corrosion beneath this stainless slide linsert - nothing unusual, but it shows the car could be better maintained (at least for my standards).
Funny, when doing MOT/emissions it did not come up, but I knew when doing the test drives / checks these needed the work and got a discount for that when negotiation price.
The radio that I got with the car burns a fuse when connected to power amp - I need to check the schematics.
Other than that I did around 1200kms before putting the car on a lift and it was superb experience. It’s a mighty highway car (and I’m happy I did travel through German Autobahns when going Home). On a low gear kick-down is a bit brutal (in positive feeling I mean) and the car accelerates so easily (even on cruise control haha) throught whlole RPM range.
It’s not loud, not to say slightly to quiet and has plenty of leg room inside (I’m 193cm tall /6ft 5).
I do own some quick’ish old Porsches and also non-Porsche V8 oldies, but 928 GTS set them all aside. It’s a completely different league.
Keep fingers crossed for my maintenance works and small repairs so I won’t go bankrupt.

I read quite a lot of threads yesterday about this flex plate thing. Got a bit worried, as I did not check that when buying the car.
I also studied different aftermarket clamp types and decided to add one soon.
The pinch bolt wasn’t tight, but it kept the clamp pushing the flex plate. I think it moved c.a. 5-7mm when I undid the bolt.
Seems noone was there, ever.
Flex plate pushed forward.
Next I decided to move the flywheel to the front and to the back to get the feeling.
Honestly it felt like it was moving way to much (but I expect that was just a feeling because of a long lever - 32mm combination wrench).
So I attached the dial and zeroed it with flywheel to the back.
And pushed the flywheel with my lever forward….
Oh that was stressful…

so your thrust clearance is still withing spec but its more worn than most I see about .010 in
Make sure to re torque the rear pinch bolt as it will probably be loose .

The one edge of the flex plate in the pictures sure has an interesting curvy shape. I have never seen one like that before.
Anyone else have thoughts on it's edge profile?
Good news that the wear is within limits. Would get a Ritech clamp from Roger and install it to stop anymore movement at the front.

No wavy flex-plate from my 1992 gts when it was an automatic

And yes rear pinch bolt retorque will follow.
In the mean time I got some parts of the rear end from zinc coating and reassembled rear hubs with new bearings.
Also did a test fit of 964 Turbo 3.6 rear rotor and caliper (rotor is 28mm thick compared to 24 in GTS).

No, not really. USA and Canada early '94 model year cars were made in spring 1993 before actual '94 MY production started in summer 1993. They wanted to do '94 MY early so they could keep selling them off dealer floor as new cars until early summer 1994 meaning extra year to get rid of them before they are old stock. These 19 made have M718 option which means just VIN is changed to next model year. They are 1993 model really in all but VIN and one extra option code. This includes deleted and added options like tire pressure monitoring and pollen filter. Every ROW '94 were all real '94 MY meaning they were build after model year change and have 1994 model parts and options like Cup II wheels, '94 .MY available paint colors etc.
I have never seen a 1994 with Cup I wheels from factory. Your car is a 1994 Indeed, from the VIN.
--------------------------------------------
At least for the N. American market, the very early 1994 GTS's came with cup I wheels. It seems they wanted to use up the inventory of the 'older design' wheels before mounting the Cup II wheels on their new cars.
The '94's and '95's have a few nice upgrades for the GTS model.

So it seems mine should have CUP2?
I have a set of CUP2 on my 924 Turbo, to narrow for 928, but might give them a try…
But I like the CUP1 design so much.
BTW when tire pressure sensor disappeared?

Yes, 928 CUP I's have sensors. They really should be saved for those 928's which came with sensors from factory. O-rings in sensors create extra leak point and sensors are ridiculously expensive. IIRR 968 '92-93 could be ordered with same size CUP I's as 928 without sensors.

Those calipers look really good. What kind of paint/power coat did you use? That orange color is gonna look really good with the blue paint. Also kudos to you for finding the correct cast hole rotors front and rear.
