Default 928 rear bumper cover

I am planning to remove the rear bumper cover of my "80 928 for a re-paint.(to save money at the paintshop ) How easy is it to remove ? Smart ?? or better to spray when still installed ?

Take it off. Otherwise you will never be very happy with the paint tape line.

It's an easy job. Just be methodical. Remove the bumper guards by going from underneath and reaching up under the bumper to access the bolts that hold them on..

Remove the taillight lenses by undoing the four screws on each. Make sure not to lose the plastic washers on the screws, and be very careful pulling the lenses out. They crack easy, and they also like to slip out of my hands. Check the gaskets to see if they are holding up.

Under the hatch at the top of the bumper is a metal plate on the top of the bumper. Remove the screws in the top of it and lift it out.

Remove the license plate lights. There are two and each has two screws. Be careful to disconnect them so you don't damage wires or connectors (this is a good time to go in and really clean these, too). Check the gaskets to see if they are in good shape.

The biggest pain is removing the very small nuts that hold the bumper onto studs along the top and sides of the inside. You can look at the PET or somewhere for a diagram but I usually find them by feel, working my hand along the upper inside of the bumper. You may need to remove a plastic shield in the driver side wheel well to get to them on that side. Getting a socket on these small nuts and turning it can be slow work. Also, if they resist, don't force them or they'll shear off pretty easily. Instead, blast the stubborn ones with PB Blaster or similar and let it soak. If you do shear one off, you can probably get used replacements from 928 International. If the bumper is not coming off, check to make sure you got all of those nuts off the studs.

I may have forgotten something, so hopefully someone can point out if I did.

Since you're taking the bumper off, buy new black rubber moulding for the gap between bumper and body. It's cheap, and you or the shop can install it after repaint.

In addition to leperboy's excellent description, here are a couple of threads I had collected on the subject:

Go with the link Carlos posted. Photos are better than words. Bottom line, though, is there is nothing difficult about this job. It should take about an hour.
