Default In-car video lap of Sears Point

This file was captured and compressed from footage taken from a couple weekends ago when Seth W & I were at Sears Point for an open track day. Hope you enjoy the show:

Laptime is around 1:55, which is about the fastest one I caught on tape. Tires are Michelin Pilot Sport Cups and suspension consists of 800/550 springs with Bilsteins, Devek swaybar and Devek custom-fabbed-super-ultra-heavy-duty-let's-see-you-try-to-break-these-Dennis swaybar mounts. I managed to destroy the stock swaybar mounts pretty completely, so here is what replaced them:

Cool!

How do you like the 550lbs. springs in the back?
I currently run 900 front/400 rear and want to go to 450 or 500 in the rear, didn't think of 550!

I think i have the best handling package, hands down for a DOT clad 928.
750 and 450lbs springs. the reason i run 450 in the back, is so I can take the body roll out of the rear by using the steroid swaybar drop links. this way, you get more compliance out of the rear, without the body roll. Dennis's choice, stiffens the rear up by 100lbs a side, and he probably has disconnected his rear swaybar or has left it stock. both techniques/ideas have their advantages. Dennis and I should swap cars for a couple of laps and see the differences.

Dennis,
Great lap! you are doing it right. the only area where you can pick up a second or two, is the dive bomb into turn 11, and possibly a late brake tap going into 10, and a down shift and a 3rd gear power out from 5k to redline. You are also about 300lbs heavier than my car too, i would imagine.

The car sounds awesome. what type of mufflers are you running? i remember, you had a borla tip and level II headers, but anything else?

Lets gut that thing and go racing!!!!
pulling those kind of laps, and probably a second or two faster in a race, you would have beaten an M3 2002, and a pumped up C5 vet in the last SCCA!

John - how much does your car weigh and what's the weight distribution? My car weighs 3250 lb and has 53% of it on the front. The spring selection on my car was also driven by the weakness of the stock front swaybar mount. As Mark says, the front swaybar is almost full soft and the rear bar is not even connected. The handling balance is great, but at a track like Sears with all the left-right transitions, you definitely feel the car loading & rolling on one side and then "unleashing" as you change direction.

Now with these indestructible front swaybar mounts, I'm going to try running something closer to Mark's setup and go stiffer on the front bar and reconnect the rear. I'm pretty sure it would help at a track like Sears but I dunno what it'd be like at a track like Laguna Seca where all the turns are separated by straights.

Gut it. Cage it. Race it. That's the goal, probably for next year. Right now the exhaust is the Devek L2 headers and two Borlas on a 3.5" pipe.

I know what you're saying about using 3rd for 10, but I'm so busy trying to get the car lined up on entry, I don't want to throw in the added complication of a downshift. Missing Turn 10 would be so very BAD. What's the divebomb technique for 11? Double apex??

Current weight is 2675 w/o fuel. I'm at ~54%f and 46% rear. So my running weight (me and 10 gallons) is around 2900.
Will be taking out the rear glass soon and lowering the car even more.

I fight wheel spin at the top of the hill at Lime Rock. I actually have to feather off the throttle to avoid the car getting to upset. I'm sure I lose a 1/2 second at the min. due to this and want to make some changes to help.

Is that your accusump line on the passenger side? Mine runs in the same place.

At Lime Rock, do you run the chicane at the top of the hill or do you bypass it? If you've got wheelspin in a straight line over the crest then stiffer springs probably will make things worse. Maybe less rebound damping if you've got adjustable shocks? If you're losing traction in the chicane then running a softer swaybar and stiffer springs may help, but it seems like a real trade-off. I would think the whole rear needs to be softer if you've got wheelspin, but that'd probably cause other problems at other corners. I'm assuming you've got an LSD?

And yep, that is the Accusump line you see. It's on its way to the spare tire well where the Accusump is mounted.

You may not know every thing I've done

FYI- The early 80 Euro bodys were the lightest. I also think the 16V motor is a bit lighter than the 32V motor.

At Lime Rock, do you run the chicane at the top of the hill or do you bypass it?

There is only one configuration for LimeRock.
Are you thinking about the "bus stop" at The Glen?

When you see the pros on TV at Lime Rock, they always use the chicane. I didn't know if club events used the chicane or the straight. Map of Lime Rock

They added the chicane to slow cars down because they were doing this:

Yikes!

Hmmmm.... I never even noticed it being there!!
All the DE's and Club Races don't use it.

I'll look closer next Friday
