Euro VIN / Date of Production?
I'm trying to pin down the date of manufacture of an '88 "ZZZ' car: The Euro's don't have the month/year stenciled into the door post like US/Can spec cars, so I contacted PCNA for a link via the VIN. Very pleasant folks, but only NA cars are in their data base (and my poor '80 is too old to be included, for the guy wanted to register me - neither car qualifies - reason to find another?)
So, do you know of a link to allow me to get the production date (month/year) via the VIN??
The VIN is WPOZZZ92ZJS849598 .
As NA sales for '88 were on the order of ~4500 units, the last 4 digits are well up there! - indicating a late '88 prod. date?
BTW, the JS84...: Many cars have a '6' in place of the '4' - any idea as to the signifigance of the 13th character?
TIA, Garth

I got an official CARDEX (or KARDEX if you please) from Porsche on my '80 Euro. It gives the build date. There's a link to get that on the PCA website: http://www.pca.org/members/library/C...uthen_Form.pdf

Criminently!! Just checked that form and the price is now $95 for '80 and later. I paid $35 (IIRC!) three years ago. Looks like a "profit center" at the worlds most profitable auto maker.

Garth,
I am having the same trouble as you. I am trying to find the date for my 89 ROW with no luck yet. One member indicated that he faxed his ownership documents to Germany and they were able to help. I have not been able to find a phone number yet. There were a few other posts on my thread a few days back. Have a look if you would like.

Guys,
Even for US model cars the VIN won't tell you the specfic year/date of build - it will only tell you the Model year so the car could be built in 2 years for any given model year - The early part of the nominal model year and the latter part of the previous year in every case.
So Kardex is the way to go - if it will include details of your car.
Sales documentation or CARFAX initial registration data may give you some clues - but sometimes there was quite a delay between Build date and 1st registration/ in-service date (about a 16 month delay in my cars case).
My car also does has a build date sticker on the drivers door pillar - but I gather this is rather atypical from everyone else I have talked to.
If Karfax works for your Euro - this is probably your best bet....

Thanks all,
No, I don't have the Kardex - and was reluctant to spring the cash when the Porsche rep (PCNA) assured me they had absolutely no data on ROW or ZZZ cars, nor could they access any internal/international link - I was politely instructed to call Germany, if I could find the number!!; I'm certain to have purchased stupid things before, but I've yet to break ground in springing a hundred bucks for my name typed on a Porsche letterhead with car 'unknown'!
The search will continue... Oh, thanks re. digit 13: I wasn't sure if that was ROW or 'sunroof delete' under chassis type.
