Alarm Question
The alarm never worked since I bought the car ( 6 mo. ago). While in my shop over the winter going through some maintanence the battery was running down and noticed the alarm light flashing on the dash .I have charged the battery and now Iam unable to disable the thing. I have tried the doors and the hatch but it still keeps going ( just like the energizer bunny). The car will start and run while the alarm is going as well... Could the battery have enough power to start the car but not enough for the alarm???? Any ideas would be a great help.

alarm:
The first thing I did after buying my shark (dead) was charge the battery up. The second thing I did was surgically remove that insane alarm that was draining the battery while going off and cycling the door locks up and down every night.

Muny the alarm you are mentioning is NOT a Porsche factory alarm ....there was never a dash light on the factory system only in 1990 did Porsche add lighted flashing doorlock ***** as a visual signal that the car is alarmed ... As the photo above indicates ADD ON ALARMS are very often a NIGHTMARE the "installers" are typically paid a flat rate for each installation and do it very quickly .........not well but quickly . The task is locating those places where they violated the factory wiring and carefully removing all the splices and butt connectors then soldering and insulating the original wires .

Not to hijack the thread, but:-)
How hard would it be to retrofit the parts from a factory alarm back into an '87 that didn't come equiped with one?
The door harness is wired for it (I'm assuming that's what the extra wires are for,) but what about the other components...
I'd like to have the flashing LEDs in the door as a deterrent, but I'm guessing doing that with Porsche parts would take more money than it's worth...

I would start by checking the door pins, the slightest resistance can cause them and the power locks not to work,
I would then pull the door panel and then pull the lock assembly, there is a cap with wires held on the end take this apart and be very careful there is a VERY tiney spring in here that activates the alarm but this spring can break, make sure you dont loose it, then with this off close the door pin, bridge the center pin and one of the outer pins release the door pin and see if the alarm goes off if no hold pin bridge center and other point and release pin the alarm should now go off, if it doesnt then the brain is fried or you have a broken wire

Hello Seattle Al,
I have just finished a mod to my 1987 S4 to give it the flashing door posts. The mod uses the original 928 parts from the newer (1990-95) cars, and works great.
With this procedure, the flashing door posts flash when the car is locked.
Unfortunately I could not find a constant 12volt signal from the 89 and older alarm units, so with this procedure, the flashing door posts are energized by a signal from the central locking system. In theory though, if the doors are locked, usually the alarm is activated. Works for me!
If you want to buy my kit it is $350.00.
Ha Ha Just kidding! It is not hard, and not too expensive (particularly if you can get used parts). I will be trying to get a DIY page up on my web site with the detailed pictures, instructions, and cost over the next week. I can let you know when it is all together?
Best regards,
Mike

Thanks for the step by step on the door pin info...Just to make things more complicated checked the battery and wasnt fully charged. Put it back on the charger and when re-connected now have no alarm???? Power locks work with key just cant arm system.
