Headlight Decision

I'm looking at putting in new headlights into my car. Which do you guys think is the best way to go. The standard xenon sealed beams, the H4 conversion kit or those kits on ebay that say they give almost the same light output as the HID kits. I found the cost of the wannabe HID kits and the H4 convert kit to be roughly the same where the regular xenon sealed beams to be pretty cheap. I would like the one that gives the best light output outta these 3. Which do you guys recommend? Thanks

I think you mean regular halogen sealed beams. Those are the standard on the US-spec cars. Once I was out on wide-open country roads at night, those sealed beams really showed off their inadequecy!

The 7inch H4 conversion was a huge improvement. The visibilty is wonderful, low and high :D . I have no expirience with the eBay fake HIDs, so I don't know how they compare.

Jessa:

Did you use the same wattage bulbs? If not, did you make any wiring/switch changes?

For the sealed beams, I was in the store the other day and was talking with the guy in the service area and he showed me the box for the sealed beam xenon lights. He said that they are supposed to be brighter than the halogen lights but I am guessing that they are not stronger than the H4 lights. I am leaning towards getting the H4 convert kit or the wannabe HID lights, I just wish I knew someone who has seen them so they could let me know what they look like and if they are as bright as they say they are.

big dave,

What is the correct wattage for the headlights fo rmy year of 928? Isn't it like 45/55 or 55/65??

heinrich 03-04-2004 05:58 PM

I have wannabe HID blue lamps. They are no brighter than the stockers. In fact, I tested and the stock fogs are brighter.

johnny928 03-04-2004 06:24 PM

heinrich, So the H4 convert kit would work better than the wannabe HID kit, right??? Check this ad out that I found on ebay and look what they are saying about these Fake hid lights

Go with 8" - either H4 or H5 - so you can do away with those silly chrome trim rings!

Randy

How much am I looking at spending to goto the 8" H4 or H5 Headlights? What do I need that is different to mount them instead of using the crom rings?

If you want the best bang for the buck, put in 7" H4's; however, to look the very best, go with a proper set of 8" lights as were uniquely designed for the 928! As Randy said, your choice of H4 or H5 - I happen to use 8" H4's.
There's a wide choice of H4 bulbs available: the standard 60/55 ( or ~55/50) work fine, although I do run one set of 100/90's) - you'll be happy either way.

You can often find good used 8" H5 lights for around $125 each - half the price of new 8" H4s.

Call your favorite 928 parts dismantler, or watch for folks parting out U.S. S4/GT/GTS cars.

The 8" H4s were only installed in ROW (euro) cars, so used ones are relatively scarce over here, and therefore more expensive than the used 8" H5s.

One thing that can really make whatever headlights you have brighter is a dedicated headlight wire harness with separate relays and power taken directly from the jump-start-stud or even the alternator.

I've seen H4 harnesses for <$35 on the internet.

...

I have a pair of like new, bought new, one year old, 8" H4's from 928 Spec, with Stronguards, that I'm going to put on the eBay soon.

$350 takes 'em!

Thanks for the tip Porken, How is you cam advance kit coming along? If you decide to sell I would be interested.

PorKen 03-05-2004 02:16 AM

johnny928,

We don't call them 'kits' anymore. They're 'products'.

I'll PM you tommorrow about the cam advance... product.
