Actually if I personally did the job I guarantee you I would place my family's lives in the trust of that work. I already do it daily on many other levels. Not to mention driving.

Thank you all for your responses. Still, anyone know a shop that would do this and the cost? Do you think a Porsche dealer would take this on? How many sensors/computers are involved?

Heinrich, well stated. Doing your own maintenance, TB, suspension, brakes, steering rack, etc. and especially your driving 'technique' all have a great effect on your safety and the safety of your passengers.

Come on, David, I don't make an issue of your bad habits!

The reason I suggested a dealer was . . . I thought originally (circa early, mid-80s) when air bags came out, many were dealer-installed options (like sunroofs used to be). That was the only reason I suggested it. Otherwise, I avoid the dealer like the plague.

Yes Dave, you are coming across a bit harshly Dude .... using names of people's kids etc is also not necessary to prove your point.

I did it on my 1983 about a year ago. It was not that hard. The only problem I had was that I used a 944 turbo airbag wheel instead of an 911/928 wheel. They look the same but have different hubs. The most expensive part will be the airbag(about $100 on ebay). In the next year I'll will upgrading to a 3-spoke 996 wheel. So shoot me an e-mail in a few month.

I knew it. By the time I read first "no it can't be done" I knew there has to be at least one who has already done it.

Weissach,

Is your airbag fully functional? If so, could you detail the procedure a little bit? Thanks.

I saw after market kits for sale for around ZAR 3000 thats driver side only but as I'm alone in my 928 90% of the time, and definitely when I push it, its good enough for me.

I've been planing to do this for some time. But I don't like the after market steering wheel.
Hopefully I'll be posting pic's of my retrofit Porsche Safety Restraint System in a couple of months

Very funny, Dave. The question wasn't directed at you anyway. Thank you for your opinion. Your points and warnings are duly noted. Some modifications to our cars are more difficult, expensive and dangerous than others. Supercharging qualifies for all three . . . but I still will likely proceed anyway. The benefit of airbag retrofitting might outweigh the risks. I don't know just yet but I do know I would like to get as much knowledge of the process, real life experiences and facts as possible and make my own judgment.

Now, if anyone has something constructive to add, it would be appreciated. Costs? Successes? Difficulties? etc . . .

This is not directly related to 928 or Porsche even. When airbags came out they were designed for large person who isn't wearing seatbelt. Thanks a lot US goverment and all drivers who don't wear it. This lead to several deaths when small driver was sitting close to steering wheel all belted up and that large sack hit into face 200mph. In Europe many manufacturers started using smaller barely larger than steering wheel bags. I think these weren't legal in US and maybe still aren't. I have little against these small ones but hate large. Anyone know what design Porsche used in Europe? Quessing same as US to save on manufacturing costs.

Erkka,

I like your signature line: "explosive charges inside dasboard." (but it should read dashboard - I know how tough English can be as a language)

Do you have any additional pictures of your GTS?? Beautiful cars.

Dave it also makes people think you're a dick. I'm asking you now directly. Do not post my child's name again.

Dash board, dashboard, dasboard, das boot Know how it's spelled but was lazy and used spell checker. Seems it shows only first mistake. Have habit of changing part of sig line on every post.

At the moment these http://koti.welho.com/evilhune/ are only pictures online.
