Lightbulb Cam Timing Tips

Remove the spark plugs! You'll spend a lot of time turning the crank, you don't need to be working against compression.

Make sure you have a long bent tip for your dial guage, there is very little room to work with and the long tip will make positioning the guage slightly easier.

Try the left hand cam first as there's a little more room to work with. Place the guage on the intake lifter of cylinder 6, preload to about 5 mm, set the guage to 0 and turn the crank. Keep turning over and over making sure the guage always returns to 0 after the lobe has passed over the lifter.

If the deflection is too little when the 20deg mark is reached you can turn the exhaust cam slightly to make your adjustment. If the deflection is too great you will have to over adjust and then make a series of small increases on subsequent turns of the crank.

The problem with the right hand cam is that one of the few usable mounting points for your guage is very close to where you need to get your spanner to turn the exhaust cam. Spend time getting the positioning of the guage right, and don't forget to ensure it's at a right angle to the head.

After you torque the cam shaft bolts to 47 ft pounds, check the timing again, it's very easy to accidently move the timing accidently at this point even though you'll be counter holding the large hex washer.
