Need some Advice - '81 Euro 5-speed 928 Looking to Possibly Sell

Hello Everyone,

I have a 1981 - 928 EU Edition with a manual 5-speed. It has 91,000 miles and is in pretty good shape. It's been sitting for a while and doesn't start.

Any opinion on an approximate price point?

Well, with the information provided thus far, I'm going to say it's a parts car. Even as a parts car it would be hard to say without more information. Without knowing anything about why it won't start, condition of the interior, history, Etc any number would just be a guess. I don't think anyone would venture a number without more details.

Euro "S" or regular Euro?

Where in TX are you located?

When was the last time the engine ran to move the car?
Why has it been parked?
It looks like it has potential to be restored to running status,
I am interested in doing that.
Please post the VIN,
and the engine code found under the top radiator hose where it meets the water bridge

That's definitely on the expensive end of the parts cars..

In my opinion, it would be foolish to not explore the no-start issue. You already have a RL account. Go ahead and open up the encyclopedia and enjoy the process. Loads of info here.

Interior shots would help. Hood paint looks faded? If that is the case then the value will suffer a bunch since it will need a respray. Here is a good site for some comps. https://bringatrailer.com/search/198...+928/auctions/

There is so much more information that you would need to provide in order for a competent guess at value to be made. Here is just a few things that will help assess worth:

  • All pertinent maintenance done with the past 10 years
  • Have fuel and power steering lines been replaced?
  • Interior condition?
  • All leather or vinyl dash and center console?
  • Are the seat seams starting to pull away or still intact?
  • Any tears in seats?
  • Cracks in the pod or dash?
  • Original paint?
  • Original exhaust?
  • Original radio?
  • Any non-factory modifications?
  • Condition of wheels
  • Age and condition of tires
  • Is the tool kit complete?
  • Does it still have the jack, air compressor and tire gauge?
  • Does the AC work?
  • Does the cruise control work?
  • What are all the things that do not work?
  • Does the odometer work, i.e. is the mileage documented or TMU?
  • Does it come with original window sticker, owners manual, maintenance logbook, etc.?

But first, before you do all that stuff above, locate the engine code on a small deck on the right front of the engine, almost under a cooling hose(a bit hard to locate, but worth it). It will be on a flat and starts with: M28/xx. If the 'xx' part is right, I'll come tow it away. I'm west of Ft Worth, can be in any of the major cities in a few hours.

Car looks very good. Engine number will clarify if it is the (much) higher hp S version, which is particularly sought after. Based on its stablemates, you are a car guy and already know that.

Most of above maint stuff are the questions you ask to keep the price point down when buying.

Relevant question is was it parked for a major mechanical reason or not. Usually not with these cars. Most of us on this forum have access to a squirled away post 85 gearbox to replace the older box that generally has synchro problems. If timing belt is intact and not parked for bad head gasket, car has significant value to us enthusiasts. If orig paint, that's a major plus, faded hood or not. Values are all over the board on this, maybe put it in the hands of one of the 928 enthusiasts here at a wholesale price and let them have pleasure of resurrecting it and showing it at events. They / we have access to all the bits to do it. Put it on BAT, that's a can of worms if maint not up to date.

I'm going to bet likely an S. Has a CORRECT spoiler installation which is no small task to accomplish on a non S car. Most "Spoiler upgrade" cars don't have the correct window gaskets and trim. As others have said the engine code and the VIN would tell the story.

Also, doesn't look like a parts car. Look at those dash gaps....that interior has had an easy life...and those look like sport seats. I'd love to find this on my end of the world.

Optimism doesn't always pay, but the times it does make up for it.

Some people must have really high standards thinking that's a parts car.

If THAT is a "parts car",,, I'm in serious trouble, lol. Serious trouble.

Nice car! I still have so much to learn about these machines and am super interested in how answers to the OP questions shake out. Thank you all.

It doesn't run.

What kind of shape is the trans in?
Brakes?
Suspension?

And, oh yeah, what about the motor?
Has the coolant turned acidic and eaten the heads?
Early Euro is CIS. The entire fuel system will need to be gone through.

Without being able to adequately evaluate it, it's not going to be worth a whole lot.
The 'value upgrade' that would occur if it was brought up to running condition could be huge. Especially if it's an M28/11 S.

I won't deny it looks pretty good. The paint would probably respond well to a good polish/correction.
The interior looks pretty decent, as Andrew noted. But we need more pics to make a real determination.

As an extra note, the bumper lights look to be original Euro, but the headlights are not H4s.

If it ran & drove without any issues, had better paint and if the interior is as good as the dash seems to indicate, this could easily be a $20k car.
As it sits, maybe $5k. Maybe.

It's not a parts car for sure, but it is also a non-runner, so any chance of a market deal much less a premium are out the window. As others have said and pointed out, it looks like a fantastic platform. The seller should either get it running or at least competently diagnosed. Until that happens, a value cannot be reasonable placed on it, except at the very low end of a good looking non-runner.

Even if the motor and trans are shot, find some used ones for a few grand, and have a decent looking running and driving car. It's flat out shocking sometimes to see how many of these cars that could be made drivable are torn apart. Difference of opinion and amount of effort that ones willing to put into something I suppose.
