Early cars had 36mm thread, and fittings for that are long time NLA. The thread did not depend on pump or filter AFAIK. Your leak could be due to a crack or other material problem with tank, or the hose, or the rubber washer between the fitting and the tank . The electrical connections in your pic say that there at least was once a pump inside. If you have not seen one inside it may have failed and been removed. Note that the hose from tank to external pump is different between filter only in tank, or in-tank pump - 92835655004 with a pump, 92835655005 with filter only. Make sure your leak is not coming down from somewhere higher up - a crack, or a leak at the gauge sender area. Some people improve the seal of the threaded insert by fitting a jubilee clip around the tank plastic on the outside there.

My Euro 928S is from 05/1980 so I suppose my tank has a thread of 37mm ? So can I just fit the following fuel strainer (37mmx1.5) ? :

And should I use the curved fuel tube 92835655005 with this strainer :

PET says the hose for use with strainer ends in 05. Not clear when the thread size changed, PET says from chassis no 92881-01288, or 92882-00054 or 92882-08528 - from these chassis nos onwards, I think 92881 means 1981 , so your 80 may have the 36mm thread, where parts are NLA. You will have to remove the fitting and measure - your tank MAY have been replaced, if you are lucky!

Today I was ready to tackle the leak on my tank at the bottom : it was the seal of my in-tank pump to the tank thread.
Luckily the thread of the in-tank pump was the same as the replacement filter screen : 37mm
Here some pics of my operation (no need to drop the tank) :

the sensor was still in good working state.

Only some rust at top but nothing bad

Here you can see that I have an in-tank pump

Support the tank and only remove the cradle

thread in the molded insert of the tank is in good state. No cracks

filter end of the in-tank pump is clogged with dirt

seal is completely gone

here you can see that pump is not working due to a cut in the supply wire. This would explain why my external pump did not supply sufficient fuel flow

nice replacement by a filter insert instead of an in-tank pump

Hello Allan,
today I managed to revive my 928 after mounting the WUR unit.
Warm control fuel pressure is now 3,4 bar and engine runs smoothly👍👌

Unfortunately I noticed another leak : coolant fluid under the thermostat housing😔
inside the hollow space under my thermostat, just above my waterpump...
Perhaps it was already there since some time because you barely notice this.
Strange because 3y ago I renewed all my seals of the thermostat housing inclusive the large O-ring
May small tear inside a tube? It sure is not my waterpump....
I heared that there are often troubles with the seals made of paper with rubber inserts.
