Unhappy Gearbox oil & Coolant

Help!!

Can anyone help diagnose whats up with my bambino!!

Came home after a long run today and on the way up the hill to my house the clutch started slipping (autobox) and engine is racing away but car hardly moving, finally got to house and gave car once over.

Turns out there is 0 oil in the gearbox and but plenty of oil in the coolant

It's not engine oil in the coolant and I am at a loss on how gearbox oil would get there (not that technical) but it smells like transmission fluid.

Any ideas on whats wrong and how to fix?

Any help appreciated.

Sounds like the trans cooler in the radiator is leaking.

Get a new radator, or plug the cooling loop in the old one, and buy an aftermarket transcooler.

For future reference, if the transmition start slipping, pull over NOW. Act like your oil pressure just droped to 0, because it probably has in the transmition. If you do it quick enough you MIGHT be able to stop dammage to the transmition, as it is, you just have to hope it's all right.

Which makes me ask, why don't we have a transmition oil pressure guage, or idoit light. We have gauges and idoit lights for engine oil pressure, and well and engine coolent temp, but nothing that tells us the state of afairs for the transmition. Imagion how many transmitions would be saved because the owner can see the pressure drop, or the temp climb beyand into the red.

Bad luck Mark, if you need a new gearbox, you may well find it's cheaper to take the car to Paul Anderson in Gloucester than to try to have the car repaired locally. Try him at 928spares.co.uk

for the automatic the heat exchanger (cooler) is built in the right side of the radiator . It has sprung a leak and the high pressure in the trans pumped the atf into the coolant while driving HOWEVER when you stop driving the atf pressure goes to zero BUT the coolant still has 15 lbs or so and water coolant may run back into the transmission !!! the transmission can not tolerate water . It is extremely important that you drain the trans , drain the cooler lines and NOT DRIVE the car . You will need a new radiator or "Mickey mouse engineer" an external trans oil cooler into the system .

Thanks for the fast responses, just so I don't go buying the totally wrong thing here

I need a new rad, is the cooler actually built into the rad and if I just order a rad it will def come with the cooler.

Sorry if that sounds stupid but gotta check.

Can you buy these recon'd and any idea of price?

The cooler is actualy built into the rad.

You have to order the correct radator, for your year and type of transmition. And you have to assume the shop give you the right one.

Look up 928intl.com's web site, they're really good about that. It's going to be expensive, no matter where you get it from.

And you have to hope your gear box is OK.

Other contacts for parts include Nick Mckenna at 928spares.com, he supplied my replacement heads at a bargain price, and Mark at Lodge Sports in Manchester who have a comprehensive inventory but realist commercial prices.

Thanks Paul, emails have now been sent.

Must have drove the car for about 5 miles after I first felt the clutch slip.

Will go with the new rad and pray that the box is ok

I would recommend flushing the fluid in there about 3 times to make sure you get all the crap out, ei fill it up run for 3 min in drive (but not moving) and then stop flush fil repeat 3x.

The bands/clutches love coolant, hopefully the're not milque-toast.

Todd:

If you are going to do the work yourself, it will be really helpful if you have an air compressor. One way to vacate as much of the contaminated fluid as possible is to open the lines and use compressed air to blow them out.
Of course you are going to need to drop the transmission pan and order a gasket and new filter as well.

Be sure that you also drain the torgue converter.

This is not going to be a trivial repair, take your time and be diligent.

Wash then rinse, wash the rinse, keep rinsing and keep rinsing???

Fitted new rad,flushed ALL day long, flushed gear box and the result.

One car all healthy, pulls even better through gears, change a lot smother, no more gunk in coolant and gearbox level spot on.
