New 928 Dashboard Assemblies
I am starting on my second 928 restoration (1979 this time). On the first 928 (1983) I tried the “caps” on both the dash and pod and did not like the fitment or that the “cap” on the dash warped shortly after installation.. I had to remove the ABS parts and silicone, repair the surface with SEM products, and refinish. After that I decided I was not going to rebuild any more 40 year old foam dashboards. I just could not find anything that would stand up to extreme heat on the dash area. So, as a carbon fiber composite fabricator for over 25 years, I am building the tooling to “re-imagine” these two parts in carbon fiber composite with a built-in new mounting attachment structure. As I would be making less complicated molds for just a few parts for my own personal restoration use, would there be any interest in all new assemblies to justify my building molds for vacuum infused parts? Projected price (with included Fedex Ground Shipping) would be under $1,000.00 for the dashboard and under $700 for the pod. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

Personally I think improvement is always a good thing.
But I'm not a purest.
Thinking of My daughter's'79 she said she would like to have a updated look . She also wants to update the console she
Wants a Panamera interior in her 928

That's awesome!
I'm just dealing on a 84 with trashed dash and that would be my first purchase!
On a side note what exhaust sounds the best?
I love borla on my bikes, I just don't see many examples of mufflers?
Thanks

Tass designed and built some fiberglass dash/center consoles for some in the past...more race oriented though and not sure what the current status is for them. That said there should be a market for what you have planned. T

On the plus side, there would be a definite weight savings and it would eliminate the cracking once and for all. On the downside, what about the glare? Would you cover it in a non-reflective material?

The primary reason for this build is to make it as close to the factory part as possible. This is not intended to be a race part and the finish would be a dark colored vinyl ester gel coat. Most of my products that I have manufactured for others were not provided with the cosmetic appearance of gel coat as ultraviolet exposure does not degrade the carbon fiber but alters the appearance of the clear coat tending to yellow it. With a gel coat finish, the part can be covered with vinyl, Alcantara or leather. Additionally it could be sprayed with any conventional finish in matt or texture. The reason I am building this part is because I could not find anything in the market that was a new replacement. Unfortunately most 928's have cracked dashes/pods. If anyone knows of any other new parts being manufactured, let me know too please as I do not wish to compete in a small market.

The market is going to be minuscule, but if you can keep the price under control you've got a good chance to sell a few. I'd be interested, although I'm already on the hook to try out the 928 Motorsports covers I have. Personally, I'd be looking for the same dash/pod/console, only made from a modern UV-resistant plastic, like any other car on the road made in the last 20 years. I'm so tired of leather and vinyl.

Great idea!
This is a good question for the guys at Classic 9 Leather and Bob... Wouldn't it be great to have a stable substrate for a replacement?
And if my memory serves me, did Carl at 928 Motorsports do a racing style CF dashboard at some point in the early 2000's???
I had a friend in the ski industry do this one for me after my airbag randomly deployed and the glare is there, but not that bad (could be flat finish).
Unfortunately the mold is long gone or I'd give it to you...

I have one of those parts that are in that picture. Its on the race car. The rules for NASA GTS series required I had to have a dash in the car of the same profile as OEM. The CF dash was just the ticket. I understood a fella made a couple years ago for sale on the Renn - it never took off. I do not know who it was or what happened to his mold. Mark Anderson sold me the one I have cuz it had a dinged up corner (it still does, you can see it on left side of instrument pod) Works fine, and I get a lot of comments about it, although I just did it because it is light, not cuz it looks good. I'd do it again.
No affiliation, I have none of them and I do not sell them These pics are from 2011

Thanks everyone for your response on the dash assembly. Our biggest concern was that someone else was making them. Anyway, since we want new, consistent dashes in our restorations, we will be starting on a tooling plug in the next 60 days. We will post updates on progress.

That will be wonderful for the 928 community to be able to get dash replacements. Good luck to you. Will they be all-black, or do you plan on making some of the more common colors as well?
