“Flex Seal” rear liner fix update

When we did the updated maintenance on the GT the rear wheel liner had started to deteriorate like so many later model year wheel liners. Dave (worf928) suggested using “Flex Seal” rubber spray to try and safe it. Nothing to loose, so I gave it about 10 coats (2 cans worth) of Flex Seal waiting about 24 hours between each coat. The liner looked good and went back in with no issues.

I have put about 300 miles , mostly highway, on the GT this year now and the liner looks as it did when we installed it. Next week I go to Camp 928 for a round trip of about 500+ miles so we will see if it continues to hold up.

Most of the cracking was on the two ends of the liner

Front side of liner was worst

No cracks have opened and nothing has “chipped” off.

Excellent report Bob. That looks pretty good, and should help a lot of folks.

That's good news!

Very clever!

That's great to hear. I have had mixed results in the past. When it worked, it worked well.

When I did the job, I first cleaned the liner surface with a degreaser, then took a scotch pad and scrapped the surface up and cleaned again before spraying the flex seal on. I was hoping to get better adhesion that way. It also said to wait 24 hours between costs to make sure rubber fully cured/dried and no volatiles left before next coat. Time will tell!

Bob & Dave,

Thanks for thinking of and posting this. I'll preemptively remove and spray the GTS liners because the they are original and un-cracked but they feel a bit stiff compared to the new ones on XX8.

This technique may help them last longer and will reduce a bit of road noise.

Flush the PSD while the left side is out. No point in not doing it unless you like pulling the liner. PSD needs flushing every two to four years (4 only if in climate controlled storage mostly - IMO.)

Good thought! Will do...

Update with 3000 miles on the liners

Just checked the “flex seal” driver side rear liner after 2400 miles trip down and back to Atlanta. Most driving cruising 75-80 and temps were 90 degrees plus for most the drive. Total mileage on the liner now ~3000 miles. Liner looks fine, no cracks opening up or liner peeling, essentially looks like when installed.

I’ll probably take the passenger side out and coat that also to preserve it for as long as I can.

Should make a commercial for this stuff! 👍

Great News.....

Impressive fix and looked great when I saw it on your GT. When I got home I planned to use the same fix on a pair of GTS liners. Despite my best efforts, they just crumbled when I touched them. 😭

Maybe Flex Tape? Lots and lots of Flex Tape...

If it helps, the new ones are much cheaper than they used to be. And more importantly, I think Porsche may have changed the compound as the new ones are more "bendy." I bought mine 6 years ago and are as good as new (still bendy). Got to have something to protect the PSD, fuel lines, etc. Roger also has a solution that uses S4 covers, but it doesn't protect the whole wheel well and doesn't have sound deadening foam.
