Porsche 928 Console Air Vent
Hello All... This is a silly question BUT after this weekend, lol, I think worth asking.
Mine is a 1986 S3 with the type vent in the photo attached. I recently recharged the A.C... It works low and behold. I was driving with my girlfriend who, although I love her, is somewhat of a practical type (a machinist by trade tho) and sceptical about the whole classic car thing of mine. Anyways She went to adjust the fiddly vent in the top center of the middle console and the thing just came into 22 pieces. I have had trouble with the damn thing... Needless to say I was a bit (quite) embarrassed... Call me a sensitive but... Are there any solutions, alternatives or fixes for this thing that isn't upwards of the $80 new part? Are the new replacement parts just a newer version of the same fiddly poorly designed things? As usual... Thank you all so much, in advance. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...be646a6f17.jpg |

I haven't had any issues with my vent itself (same type as yours...my car is also an '86) but hold off on the match.com :) A machinist girlfriend could be VERY useful. Just gotta get her on board with the car...

I think I'm missing that wavy retainer... I've had this thing apart and haven't seen anythin like it... Is there one in the center vent,,, as well? |
I'll hold off on the MATCH thing, LOL. My lady is hot,,, makes GREAT money, is a great cook and yes a machinist with a true machinists eye - and stuff. She is a helpful skeptic and was the one who suggested write the post,,,, volunteering to do the fix IF she thinks it makes sense. It's not a good idea to let me work on things as fragile... But thanks.

Could you post a picture of your vent in pieces? It would be helpful to see what actually failed. That way we can can give you some ideas on how to fix it.

the spring is attached at the ends of the vent fins. Once attached they move in unison. |
I see said the blind man...
Ok,,, I don't want to buy an $80 Center Vent so it looks like I have some figuring to do,,, that is,,, lest someone can shoot me an idea... wink wink |
Is that $80 the new price or used? If that's the new price, check with 928 international if you haven't already...they may have a used one cheaper.

In house fx
Do you have the "long springy thing" on your other vent the one with all it's blades ? If so disassemble the Known Working Part and have a machinist replicate it
