How to unblack my black cam towers
At some time in my life I wanted the camtowers from my '78 to be black. Don't ask me why. It was when 928's weren't worth a pair of old shoes.I never used them but now I need them. But I want them back to the original glory again. How to unblack them? I don't want anyone blasting with abrasive media until the black is gone but the bearing surfaces are gone too, So chemical stripping springs to mind. I guess heat won't strip the paint because it was intended to be heat resistent. So how do I proceed? Any suggestions?

There are some nice aluminum finishes out there. Perhaps use one of those over the black?
I remember seeing Manirva at Sharktoberfest and I think William used an aluminum colored paint on the cam towers?? Looked awesome and I thought it was original! Check with him or Rob Edwards.

Minerva's cam towers were tumbled and then finished in a satin clear by a local shop. But they were raw aluminum to start. Not sure how/whether tumbling would remove paint.

The nasty chemical strippers (methylene chloride, e.g. KleenStrip original from Home Depot) work on most paint (exception: 87-95 intakes). After an hour you should be able to wipe it off with a rag. Ventilation/gloves are a must.

What did you paint them with? That should guide the choice of stripper/remover.

I'll swap them for the natural aluminum finish ones from my 79 if you're interested. #5 cam plug hole has been modified for a crankcase breather fitting but accepts a standard threaded cam tower plug. The others use the rubber plugs from that model year.
I could run them through my parts washer prior to shipping. Here's what an oil pan looked like after that process.

Thanks for the suggestion Petza914. Perhaps swapping is the best solution. I got one spare (not the one in the picture, that one has the autograph of Peter Falk) so only need one extra. But will it carry the soul of my car? I wonder where it hides...
Besides that. Shipping from the US to the Netherlands is horrifylingly expensive. And add 25% tax to the total of value + shipping.

Well, I took them to the blasters and they plugged the hols, covered the openings and glass-bead blasted them. Now what can I do to preserve this look? Clear coat them?
