Default Mystery sensor on 1989 S4

Could someone please tell me what this sensor is for? It’s hanging loose at the back of the engine bay! Thanks!

Exhaust Gas Temperature sensors for the IMS are the only plug like that on the engine. (Edit: you’ll find another one on the other side of the engine.) That looks like a purpose made ‘bypass plug’ or something. Into what country was this 928 originally delivered?

Read up on the IMS system. Something’s going on, or has gone on in the past.
