Broken Shifter Plate
 
The shifter plate has broken on my GTS. You can see from the pic that the two posts are broken. Plus the plate n

o longer slides freely rearward.

Any suggestions or previous write-ups that describe how to replace this?

I'm guessing the top plastic console surround will have to come off. In my case I have a Jaeger brushed aluminum overlay installed using double sided tape. I image removing that will destroy it as it is pretrty thin material.

Center console comes out. Two metal levers release the surround from the console.

Once you have the replacement in your hands it will all make sense.

This just recently happened to me. I could not get a nice used one and ended up ordering a new one from Porsche.

You don't have to remove the center console to remove the shifter plate.
Remove your shift knob. Then probably remove your added-on plate. Then, you can pry up on the shift plate from the console. It is tricky, held by one tab on the left edge and three on the right, and if I recall it was easiest to pry the right side up and free and then the left. I think I used a very thin plastic trim pry tool.

The part that broke on yours is incorporated with the sliding portion, which I don't think you can get separately. However, you don't have to have it. You could go to the full leather boot that is sold by a couple of the vendors and eliminate the slider and your broken part altogether. Looks better than the slider thingy IMO, too.

on left of plate are 2 tabs that need be released. then left side will raise (driver side) then the tabs on other side. On mine the accordian slider got below the guide in rear and jammed/broke ( as in your picture) Did this happen when shifting from 3 -4 or 4-5?

Look on the Pirtle tips page for a full detailed description of the removal process. Shift handle comes off. Little boot comes off. Two levers under the plate are rotated to release the plate from the console, and this is where the fun can happen. The most common failure during this process is not getting the two arms rotated to release it completely before lifting. WSM pictures show the arms from the bottom after the plate is removed.

Yes they did make a nice kit. I had one. I'm not sure where the Jaegger stuff ended up though. Nicole was selling their stuff for awhile.

If the shifter plate is fighting the handle it means something is interfering with it. The way the plate rolls back if there is something in the window switch area (wires) it can interfere. This will break it like yours has if the owner is a ham fisted and tries to force the shifter back.

The shifter itself needs to be installed/aligned so it's going straight forward and back relative to the console and the plate. The holes where the shifter base attaches to the tunnel are big so you can get that stuff just right. Lots of room to adjust means lots of room to screw it up too.
