ID Plate Passenger Floorboard?

Interesting Easter egg found this weekend.
Pulling interior sound proofing for the track car.

This plate was under the tar based adhesive insert on the floorboard. Made of very thin metal.

I assume it was the body number before it was assigned a chassis number?
It certainly has no correlation to the cars VIN that I can appreciate.

Can anybody confirm or deny my theory?

Indeed, this is the 3842nd body shell for a 1986 928.
You should find the same number in small font on the top left of the trunk sticker. This is the first time that I see such a plate, and I would guess that it was not supposed to stay here. Funny anyway.

Hey, thank you for the insight.

Yeah it it looked like it was riveted to frame at one point, but was not attached to anything the day it got entombed at the factory.
Interesting.

Looks like my post of the stamping in the rear, is in fact, on the pop-up deck lid/hatch-- near the lock section. (NOT the body- yes a removable-replaceable part--odd) I will look tonight on a few of my cars. and photograph, in a wider zoom.. there is also a few other threads on this subject, as the experts are still trying to decipher this mystery, of vin's in correlation to body/chassis/production numbers and the ROW, US, Japan cars. Looks like they ran, sets/banks/ blocks of cars?? and or based on maybe production of parts?? in correlation to the (euro motors, fenders specific parts) This makes sense, as to RUN, 50-100 Euro's with Euro parts--- then run 50-100 US cars with US parts (as orders accumulated and were processed)- maybe they had maintenance come in on the weekend to swap parts bins over, for the following monday runs, etc.
I will later post some of these links to the other threads, or cut and paste, the pertinent comments.

Does this TAG#, match the stamping on the rear hatch?
