Default 82 five speed cluster not lighting with key on

Hi guys, Usually all the cluster "check" lights come on when key is turned to ON, today only the low fuel, parking brake, and stop light comes on and when I start it they go off. For some time now when only these come on, after I drive for a while, and while driving ALL the lights come on until I shut it off and restart it. Today they never came on, and to complicate things. while on the highway, about 75, I noticed the volt meter was pegged at 16 so I put on the lights and the car SHUT OFF. Cruised over to the breakdown lane, turned key off, restarted as normal and ran fine for rest of day but still no Cluster check with key on. Everything else works, all dash lights, gauges, headlights, etc.
22 years with this car Still Love it!

That is a strange problem. I would say your central warning controller is failing but I don't think that could possibly cause the engine to shut off and the volt meter is independent of that system. Have you done any work around the instrument pod lately?

I'm thinking your ignition switch may be on the way out.

My ignition switch just likes to shut my headlights off sometimes while I'm driving

I figured it out tho, so it doesn't happen anymore

My '82 had a similar issue - although without the car shutoff issue. The central warning unit has a BD437 transistor and a 22uf capacitor that are essential for the 'bulb test' function. If either has failed the bulb test doesn't work. An easy fix if you're handy with a soldering iron. Note MY84 on has a different central warning unit which isn't compatible if you end up looking for a replacement.
