Default 928 newbie

Greetings all...
Another newbie here...new to 928s but not Porsche. Those of you that attended Hershey may remember a really nice 1985 S in blue over olive (or granite green...not sure of the color) in the for-sale area. After chatting with the sellers (who are very nice folks!) I decided to take the plunge and buy a 34-year-old Porsche without a PPI !! I collected it this past Thursday and trailered it from the Scranton, PA area to my home in Towson, MD.

I also got some goodies with the deal...

The story is that the car sat for 20 years in a heated garage. It appears to have been well-stored. It shows 31,xxx miles and looks like an all-original paint survivor. Nothing on the car is inconsistent with the mileage indicated on the odometer. I'll get a paint meter on it soon. The seller learned of the car from a friend. I think it was sold out of an estate situation. The seller is a muscle car guy so although he found the car interesting it was never going to be a keeper for him. He did a timing belt, tensioner, water pump, fuel injectors/pump/pressure regulator, crankshaft sensor, tires, and brake work. He put 35 miles on it!
Known issues as of now are a sunroof problem and dead radio that can wait, a left combination gauge (temp and fuel quantity) not working, a coolant light, a belt ten light if I rev to about 4000rpm (light goes away after a re-start), and a high idle that sometimes wanders up and down after start.
I have put about 125 miles on it and must say I really like it! Totally different from my 88 Carrera and 70 914-6. Any help with my "issues" is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Lee

Welcome to the tank! That car is fantastic. I spent a lot of time talking to the seller and going thru the car. It’s a legit low miles survivor. Try driving it a bit and see what happens with the idle; sometimes these issues resolve themselves on these cars by driving them, they don’t like to sit. Also read through the FAQ thread at the top of the forum all the way through. Can’t wait to see this car agin at a future function

Totally agree! I've never seen that combo before. My guess is that is ultra rare for an '85.

Yes...hopefully some mileage will exorcise these gremlins.

Very nice example you've recently purchased...she's a beauty Would get it to a 928 specialist in your area and there are a few really good ones. Stan RL handle: "Mrmerlin" is not to far right outside Philly, and Pete in LI, to name a few. All fuel & high pressure power steering lines will need to be changed if not recently done, new fluids, etc. Hope to see this cool 928 car and meet you at Frenzy in the fall. 77tony

I'd make an appointment with Stan (mrmerlin here on RL) near Philadelphia to get a few of the critical issues taken care of, like the gauges and the timing belt tension. He'll walk you through everything on the car, and you can decide then whether it's stuff you want to do or have done for you. The timing belt tension and temp gauge operation are critical to engine survival.

Looks like your collection of goodies includes the full service manual set. Good late-night reading stuff, and an absolute must for working on almost everything on the car.

Welcome to Rennlist and the 928 ownership experience. The group here is perhaps the most supportive of any car group I've run across. Virtually anything you find on your car has been found before, and most of that is documented here. Use the search function, but don't be afraid to post questions even the most mundane. Others have walked your path before you, and are happy to share their knowledge, experience, and guidance.

Take the time to read through the "New Visitors" thread in the sticky section at the top. There's a ton of useful info there. You may not need or want everything that's there now, but knowing what's in there will save you a lot of frustration as your ownership progresses.

Last but not least, click on the Membership tab in the header bar, and step up to regular membership. You'll be able to build a signature area message that includes details about the car like year/model, saving you the chore of typing that info into every post. There are other fringe benefits, but that one is the most immediate and important to the rest of the folks here, the ones who will be helping you along during your journey.

Again, welcome to Rennlist and the 928 group.

Welcome to the Shark Tank.

That's a gorgeous car.

Color should be on a sticker in the driver's door jamb. Both name and code. It will have the interior code too.

Temp/gas gauge is possibly pod connections. They get their input from different places, so if both are out, I'd suspect the common connection. Pod removal is not terribly hard, Dwayne's write up is good (linked in the New Visitor sticky that was suggested reading).

The TB warning light is worrisome. If it fails, the valves crash into the pistons and the fix is extensive and expensive. More than likely, with so little mileage on it since the change, it either wasn't tensioned correctly to begin with or it needs to be retensioned. But it's not something you want to take a chance with.

Get hold of MrMerlin. He'll get you where you want to be.

Looks like a Blaupunkt Monterey SQR 23 with the optional gooseneck equalizer. Totally bada$$!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I will be searching, reading, and learning about the ways of the 928 in order to get this one fully reanimated. The radio is the Monterey SQR 23 with the EQ...both dead for now. The color appears to be Prussian Blue...was that a paint-to-sample from the 911 pallet? Still don't know the proper name for the interior. Just realized all instrument lighting is dead (fuse looks good). The timing belt tension light stays out if I stay below 4000 rpm. The belt has about 200 miles on it. This thing sat for a long time so hopefully some use will do her good.
