Ok, here's a question.......
On the assumption that the rack and pump didn't noticeably change locations over the years, why would there be such a startling difference in length between the 1990 and 1991 model years?
This resulted in a serious WTF moment when I pulled the old one out and compared it to the new one.
We've determined that the longer hose that was in my car is for a '91 and the much shorter new one is apparently for an '87 to '90.....
Thoughts on this one????
And does the "short hose" actually install properly??

The variance is startling....

Longer is better - right?

That is a large difference between 90 & 91. 91 had the 100 bar pump and the so called HP rack. However the mounting points were the same as was the location of the connecting points on the pump.
So WHY the large increase in length and shape?? Run must be different as well - need to look at my GTS.

And the longer line wasn't attached to the mounting block on the fender. The length of the lower hard lie section running back towards the passenger compartment was much too long to allow for securing it there.....

The shorter hose just supersedes the longer one. I just replaced a long hose with a short hose on my '88. I think its a better design, and the long is NLA, I believe. Getting the banjo bolts aligned is always a pain, but easier if you have someone on top to help move the hose around up there. On the pump side I dropped the pump and started the banjo bolt with the pump down and then set it back in place. If you are by yourself it helps to tape or wire the hose in about the right position up top before trying to get rack side banjo bolt in. I replaced both my '93 and my '88 and the short hoses worked fine, so I would say it fits all S4 and later cars.

Karl - both hoses are readily available. A few months ago the long later hose was temporally unavailable.

The '91 to '95 hose clamps to the chassis in a completely different spot.

It's pretty simple, guys:
Install the correct hose for your model year.

We are very proactive about replacing power steering pressure hoses, after getting in two cars that caught on fire, last year. If the hose has not been replaced, we strongly suggest to our clients to do so.

Based on the input from this thread, I Fire-sleeved the new hose that will be going into my car tonight.
