This is what you should be doing! Huge mistake "loosing" your original limited slip transmission! Knowing what I've read about troubles with Joe in the past, I didn't want him to have my money AND my trans (I already paid for the one he's building but used my VISA). I finally decided to cut bait and let him build a non-LSD and keep mine (agreed on $400 core)--was told it could be ready in a week (3 weeks ago). I'm going to tell him 1 more week or I will go to VISA to get my money back. I've asked for pictures of the build to verify he's actually doing something and haven't recieved any. Trying to give the guy the benefit of the doubt... he is responsive to email and phone calls and seems like a great guy but where's my trans???!!!

Assuming I finally get it, I'm considering having a local shop inspect it and potentially look at putting the guts into my trans with LSD. Would this be something a good trans shop could do? They would have to be a very good transmission shop, equipped with some very special tools and a large assortment of shims for 928 transmissions. The case determines the pinion deprh, the differential preload, backlash, and depending on what year transmission he is sending you, 5th gear spacing. You'd essentially be paying someone to re-rebuild your transmission, plus ring and pinion set-up fees.

On the clutch- It looks like it can be replaced without pulling the torque tube later? Yes, clutch can be replaced with or without torque tube installed. Are all 3 torque tube bearings the same? Yes. I definitely need to replace them while it's all out. 928 International has the bearings with new carriers that you need.

But those tools are so cheap and easily available!

To be fair, you only need a couple of pieces out of this set. But they're still about $2600 worth. No car included.

I'd hate to think how much money Greg has tied up just in shims. Certainly in the range of multiple thousands.

There was a guy from Cogs Cogs at Hershey Swap in April buying every manual trans core he could find. He bought a 914 gearbox core from me, then I saw him later loading his truck with more 914s, 915s, 901s, etc. When I asked him about G28/03 and G28/05 he said they were "desperate for cores"

Any more info on how complete these are?

Someone on FB just said they got a "full rebuild" 5spd no core required for $3k.

Simply price out a set of synchros, an input shaft bearing, a gasket set, lower layshaft bearings, and a slider or two. Figure out how they can offer a quality rebuild for 3K.
Impossible, without a "negative labor charge".

Re-using any of those parts (and several others) gives you a "used car lot....make it work for 6 months" transmission.

$2329 plus whatever 4 layshaft bearings cost (they're NLA) for a G28.11, $2181 plus layshaft bearings for a G28.12. Not sure what to quote for a G28.07 since the sliders are NLA. When's the last time you rebuilt an early box that didn't need at least 1 slider?
