Headlight relay, differences?
I have a dead headlight relay, Intermittently, even when parked,it would started to make the light pods go up down up down up....etc till the battery flattened. I dont use the car much at night so not having headlights did not worry me (I have double spots , replaced my fogs with US spec spots, OK for around town)pulled the relay, problem solved. Needed to drive to a club meeting last week in an area with no street lighting , put the relay back in ,seemed to be working OK. on the way home smoke started coming from the fuse panel, total loss of power. hit the battery isolater switch, this stopped the smoke. after a tow home found a completely fried wire at the back of the panel and burnt part in the relayThe car is a 1982 ROW RHDThe relay is the big double onethe only one I have seen listed is 928-618-107-05 from suppliers in the Statesthe dead one from the car is 928-618-107-00, can't seem to find this one anywhere .
Will there be any problems if I use the 05? Is there a difference in the internals between left and right hand drive models? Does the switching for high/low beam change between RHD and LHD relays? |

Apologies The last two digits on my dead relay is 00 ( cant read my own scribbles) I have corrected this on original post

My car had a dead -02 relay, replaced at some expense. Later bought what I thought was a bargain off ebay, but when I looked at it recently, its a -01, bigger and incompatible pins. Turns out on the early cars the motor does a 360 rotation to erect or lower, but the later cars, due to a bigger condenser, the motor only does 180 degrees, so the relays are VERY different. Make sure you specify your model year when ordering.

I have a brand new 05 I mistakenly purchased if you're interested. I'd let it go for $70 including shipping to the US. Let me know if you're interested.

Are there any differences in relays fitted to left hand drive cars as opposed to RHD? Thanks jpitman2 for info. dhallford I'm in Australia, but thanks for offer. |
dhallford, do you still have that 05 relay available? I'd be interested if so, thanks!

UK RHD cars had some different headlamp set-ups for dim-dip regulations for some years. I'd assume that did not apply to other ROW RHD cars.

I have good luck reviving a couple relays by removing the cover and spaying down with DeoxiT D100.
