Default 1986.5 Clutch pedal dragging / hesitating on return.

Hi

928s 1986.5 manual.

When I depress the clutch pedal I feel a quite large hesitation or dragging of the clutch pedal. From full to the floor I return somewhere to just past midpoint where the clutch feels like it fully engages, then the pedal almost pauses then continues to return to fully released. It is subtle but its feels like the equivalent of a 2 step process to release the clutch. At the midpoint "pause" it feels kinda - grindy.

In adition, I feel like I have a lot of travel in the clutch pedal also feels like I need to go towards the floor to get to shift.

I am about to work on adjusting my intermediate disk, as I have an intermittent issue with downshifting. Perhaps this will solve the issue but I feel like it is a separate issue with the lever / hydraulic system.

The reason why I ask now is that I have a day to work with my mechanic to make the clutch adjustment.

If there is any troubleshooting advice or parts ordering I would like to be prepared to try an solve the total clutch issue.

Thanks in advance.

Ben

Have either the master or slave cylinder been rebuilt/replaced?

Had a similar situation as what you're describing. It went away after I rebuilt the slave cylinder.

Thanks 928s MN, that does not surprise me just wanted to hear it from was familiar with a similar issue.

I feel like I have a lot of travel in the clutch pedal also feels like I need to go towards the floor to get to shift but I have nothing to compare too. Also at the midpoint "pause" it feels kinda - grindy. I imagine the grind must be coming from somewhere closer to the pedal like the roller bearings or the master cylinder perhaps??

Thanks

Ben

Could be the clutch release bearing snagging on its Guide tube, 928 116 087 13 from my 928srus bill.

Check your clutch ball socket bushing, 928 116 145 03. This being failed combined with the High Pressure opti moly paste being 30 years old and none existant contributed (I believe) to mine snagging upon pedal release. My guide tube had worn down and was rough.
Turned out my release bearing and pilot bearings were ok but these are the usual wear items to replace when doing clutch work.
Good luck

Well I hope its not this as I talked about replacing the release bearing with my mechanic and he said it was done (but I don't see an oily release bearing in my bag of replaced parts!!!)

I deliberately payed closer attention to the problem today in traffic when it happens most frequently (start-stop, low gear low speed).

The problem applies to 1st or 2nd sometimes 3rd, I think it could apply to 4th or 5th but I would never come to a stop in 4/5th. It still happens intermittently even in the same driving condition I would say 50/50. It will stay stuck in gear and the clutch is surely engaged a little as the engine idle revs drop to say 650 / 700. When I pop it into neutral it returns to 800 or so or normal idle.

When I depress the clutch I would now say that for the first 40% or so it is having no effect on the clutch. At the "hesitation point" with very very small grinding feel I think is where the clutch starts to disengage, only when I am 95% to the floor is the clutch fully disengages and I suspect it might never truely fully disengage and it feels a little too notchy between 2nd 3rd.

If I google this problem without "Porsche 928", it seems to be the clutch release bearing.

Could be the clutch adjustment.

Could be the slave cylinder.

Could be Master Cylinder.

Ball cup I feel is the least likely of the problems considering the feel of the clutch pedal and I don't feel any perceptible slop in the shifter,

The grinding feeling could be something in the clutch pedal mechanism if I wanted to separate this issue.

Please give me your thoughts guys I am hoping to get a good idea of what to do first rather than just EVERYTHING!

since your having problems with the clutch doing everything might be warranted if you dont want to do rework in a year .
Inspecting everything thats been suggested should be on the gameplan.

the release arm bushings fail with regularity, remove the aircleaner base to see it .
You could also update the slave line to the Greg Brown version this makes bleeding easy and the will remove the possibility of air.
The MC thats available will also need to have the piston modified to a 4.5mm shorter tip.
the feed hose should be replaced with the new silicone black feed hose from Brembo.
