Unhappy Huge oil puddle on the intake!

Hi Rennlisters,

Got the airbox out to start motor mount replacement and found a big oil puddle on the intake.

Want to know the possible reasons before taking things apart!

Thanks for any input,
Tom

It's most likely a leaking oil filler gasket. A fairly common issue and moderately annoying to fix but doable. I've personally done it on the side of a street with a flashlight.

The gasket is ~$10 and now would be a great time to replace all of the old hoses for the air/oil separator that are likely as old and brittle as the rest of the car.

Thx Blake.

Could you be more specific? Don’t know where that oil filter gasket you mention is...

Yes, you’re right, the hoses are britle. I find myself getting caught in predicaments every time I leave something old! Changed the fuel pressure hose and the lower tank to pump hose, only to have to bring the tank down because the upper return line was rotted...changed the lower shifter rod coupling and then was left with the shifter lever dangling - got back home in 3rd - because the front shift rod coupling gave out! Rebuilt the two rear brake calipers because the driver’s side got stuck, then a short while later the front right seized too, lol...should’ve done all four!

Always an adventure,
Tom

Oil filler gasket goes between the filler body and the block. Somewhat stretched hexagonal in shape. If you are changing this, now would be a good time to fit a baffle to address oil splash getting into the breather system and looking in the airguide. Search the list, there is lots of chat about it...

Thx guys.

I’m an idiot - didn’t read well...I read oil filter, not “filler”!!!

that makes sense.

Keep you posted.

Quite understandable when dealing with a 928, it's a very "target rich environment" but you would have a heck of a problem if filter leak resulted in oil in the valley!

Mine ended up being the breather hose from the valve cover of course mine is an 87. Dont know if the breather system routes the same. The hoses will rot and give out.
