Is the 928 GT the Classic Porsche to Own?

I agree about the 928 GT, but the 1989 is my favorite, just because it is the closest to a CS, with a good level of equipment.
Also, this is a limited edition with a specific equipment code.
I still prefer a CS, but that is a very personal choice.

‘89GT > ‘91GT > ‘90GT
Driver ergonomics in the ‘89 gives it the win.
No airbags means elevated steering wheel hub option and no giant anti-submarine pad that rubs the skin off of your knees. Best driving postion FTW.

Mmmmm..... '89S4 5-Speed ... I have one here. Motor out on a stand. '89GT > '89S4 5sp.... '89S4 5sp vs. '91GT. Tough call. Given equal starting points with a typical 30-year-old 928 that I'm going to keep (as in, I'm R,R&Ring the complete drive train) ... still a tough call.
On the '89, put in a '91+ "Fat" Shift ****, and replace the sound deadening with modern, better material, replace the coil-overs with something less floaty and the main things that are missing is the 4k-rpm rush of the GT cams and the 2.73 rear end. If you're planning on adding power then the 2.63 rear in the '89 is a nice starting point. Also, it makes for slightly lower-rpm cruising on the highway.
The '89 is unique in the 928 world. It has a lot of the good stuff from 90+ and none of the 'bad' stuff where 'bad' means maintenance/parts issues. For example PSD is great as long as it hasn't seized from lack of flushes. Airbag warnings from dirty connections. Door harnesses on '90+ are going to start going in the next 10 years. Except that the part of the harness that goes due to flexing when you open the doors is - starting with 90s - the dash harness, not the door harness as with <'90. A lot of '89-only parts are still on the shelf in Germany and not as expensive as non-'89 parts that have been zombies and come back at much higher prices.
5-speeds '89 to '91 are so rare that it's not worth it to pass on a '90 or '91 that is 'worth' buying just to wait for the perfect-for-you '89.

I understand the 89 reasoning but what is the difference between the 90 and 91 that would rate the 91 as the better car? Last model year?

There are probably a dozen other threads too.
