GTS Power mirror issue, searched but still need help

So, I have an issue with my GTS where the power mirrors (both) don't work.

This is what I've done so far:
- taken both switches in drivers door apart and Deoxit'ed them and put them back together even though they looked fine.
- verified power to the 5 prong switch
- verified memory seats work
- fuse in panel is fine... I believe it was #40

This is what I'm seeing and curious whether this is telling me what's wrong
- When I unplug the 6 pin connector (the right to left mirror selector switch) and move the joystick I get power in these wires:
1) when I push left on the joystick I get power in #1 pin in the 6 way connector wiring/plug (no other movement... up, down or right do I get power)
2) when I push up (towards the front of the car) I get power in #2 pin in the 6 way connector wiring/plug (no other movement... left, right or down do I get power)

Is this telling me the joystick is bad? Since I get power when it's moved left in pin #1 or up for pin #2.... I would think the mirror would work at least in that direction but I get nothing.

So, I'm torn as to what else should I be doing? Every wire I've looked at seems in very good shape but I do realize there could be wiring issues but with the joystick not working I would think that would be the most likely issue but as mentioned above the mirrors don't move then either...

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!

Please take a multi meter and check the back side of every fuse on the CE panel while its in place,
you should have 12V on either side if it,
any that dont show power should be replaced.
Also what was the last thing you worked on?

Mine work, but I've given up on the memory settings.

OP, nice looking 993 in your avatar!

As for your mirrors, you need a multimeter to measure the presence/absence of voltage. Without that specific information, troubleshooting will be difficult for all.

Stan, thanks for the input! Is the back of the major fuse panel on the floor the one I should be checking or are you referring to the smaller mirror control box underneath the dash by the hood release? To answer about what the last things I had done is a lot... entire engine out and wiring harness along with resealing and 20 years of maintenance. So, unsure what could've happened. The only additional item that did happen was I needed to remove the starter to have it rebuilt as it started to fail. I forgot to disconnect the battery and the main power wire sparked upon removal on the lower cross member but the other wiring harness was already disconnected and i immediately removed the battery terminals after...can't believe I forgot that one but was hoping the spark didn't affect anything. Everything else is working fine and has not been affected, but I didn't check the mirrors after so it could've been from motor our work as well.. I hadn't used them before the motor came out months and months ago.

SwayBar, DaBears!! I used to live in the city and 1/2 my family is from the burbs. the 993 is a 97 TT, thanks for the compliments. I used a multimeter on the wires which is how I found the presence of voltage in the OP, what else should I be checking for voltage? Or, should I remove the plugs where the mirror control box is under the dash by the hood release and check continuity or remove mirrors themselves to check continuity inside the mirror from the switches?

My thought is why would I only have power as mentioned in the first post when moving the joystick in one direction, I figured that must be bad but still confused as to why I have it and in other positions I don't...

Thank you for any additional help guys!

CE panel fuses are what i would like you to check there is a small opening on the back side of each fuse pin.

x98boardwell 02-17-2019 12:59 PM

Okay, will get on that today Stan. Thanks again.

x98boardwell 02-17-2019 07:02 PM

Okay, checked all power.. I also took the switches apart again and cleaned them. Update...

Both mirrors work up and down but no left to right. Since it's both mirrors with the same function issue would that mean it's the toggle switch or the mirror controller for that movement?

Thanks,
Bryan

put some deoxit 100 into the switches and then use them as much as you can maybe the operations will be restored or swap in a new set of switches

x98boardwell 02-22-2019 01:41 AM

Figured it was the toggle switch so I bought a new one and same issue. Since it's both mirrors with the same symptom should I check the left/right switch as a possible culprit? Maybe one of the teeter-totter style arms inside are not connecting all the way, or is that impossible to affect the left/right vs. up/down movements? If not, could the mirror control unit by the hood release also cause this issue or is this likely broke wiring somewhere?

x98boardwell 02-22-2019 11:38 PM

Anyone..

1) Can the mirror controller by the hood latch lever contribute to both mirrors only working up/down and not left/right?
and/or
2) Is the switch that controls the left/right mirrors on the drivers door have both left/right and up/down control or is it just a left/right "mirror" switch and no movement associated with in terms of its ability to allow left/right movement but not up and down?

Thank you for any input/help!

Bryan

This is not a reasonable test - it varies in details by year - but many fuses are not connected directly to battery power, some are ignition or accessory switched and others are dependent on equipment switching to be activated.

For example: on a '93 GTS only 14 fuses are powered by the battery directly, 3 are accessory switched, 7 are ignition switched while 19 are connected to switched equipment and 2 are not connected at all. This is quite typical

Alan thanks for chiming in,
the reason I suggested this was so the OP would have an easier time of checking the fuses to see if they are good.
Instead of pulling them all out .
FWIW I have on more than a few times seen where replacing a blown fuse has restored function to the mirror systems,
interior light systems and stereo systems. sometimes even just moving the fuse has resulted in restoring operation
and its not particular to any year but mostly on 87 and newer cars.
This fact may be due to the CE panel modifications that get done to fit aftermarket electronics as the car passes from owner to owner.
My 88 had a lot of little clip ons to CE panel wires that POs have mucked about.

x98boardwell 02-25-2019 05:16 PM

Guys thank you again for the input. Does anyone know with the left/right switch if it only controls which mirror is being used or does it also allow for up/down and left/right movement with that switch? I trying to determine if the switch is bad otherwise I will work with the mirror control unit and then test wires for continuity... anyone have a diagram for this system?

Appreciate all the help!

Mrmerlin 02-25-2019 05:50 PM

check the WSM the diagram is in their
