Erik - your post #48 - those Facebook screenshots, Thank you. I read them again carefully. I still agree with everything I said.

I see that your responses continue down the path of personal attacks and insults. You offer nothing of substance about the supercharger kit.

Why wont you answer my question?

I would like Erik to tell us what has been done to solve the overheating problem caused by the MURF cold air intake blocking the radiator. The earlier solutions for this problem were just throwing more fans at the problem, which resulted in alternator failures, upgrades and melted wiring harnesses (ask me how I know!) and more than a few blown head gaskets caused by the overheating. I hope they have re-engineered and have that problem solved.
You can't block off some 48 sq inches* at the very center of a radiator and expect there to be no effect. The owners in southern climates have to go to extremes to cool their MURF-equipped cars, and merely throwing fans at the problem is not the answer. *this cold air inlet is approximately 6"X 8" or 48 sq inches.

Here is the cold air intake that is placed directly and immediately behind the radiator on a MURF kit. It's a bad design that reduces the effective area of the radiator right at the same time that you are making more power with the supercharger and therefor more heat. I reported my concern about this several times but nothing was ever done about it other than to add fans. Those many fans (as many as 5!) fried alternators, and when they went to 200 AMP alternators because of the fans, the system fried wiring harnesses. The phone calls I took about overheating from southern or urban-driven cars, the help I was not able to provide those customers through the MURF system after I reported them; these were also factors in my decision to part company with the MURF kit.

Good, so you acknowledge Tim Murphy never, ever entered the market of producing supercharging kits for 16V cars which means your "reason" to turn your back on your agreement with him was complete BS.

The Murf928 kit went through many changes over the years, and others are still on the drawing table. It's none of your business what I may have planned for the future.

I am pleased that your biased opinion about MURF supercharger kits is finally out in the open. You promote the MURF kit because you have a vested interest in it. The readers needed to know that your opinions are and have been slanted to favor yourself.

That's been out in the open since 2003 when Tim and I started to supercharge my car. My avatar for many years was a shot of my engine. Nice try, I've never hid anything on that regard.

I've assisted people with kits from all different vendors, and some DIY people. My "bias" is for the end user.
I've recommended boosted products from Dave Roberts, John Kuhn, steered people to check out the new kit from Hans and again, not sure where Victor is.
Strokers? Greg Brown.

The reason for making more Murf928 kits? I need one and I'm constantly being asked by people when more will be available. If I'm having one part machined up, might as well do a couple more.

This discourse has been very discouraging.

I started this thread in order to review the currently available options for self-installed power enhancement to my 928. I appreciate the suggestions that were given for currently available options (like Victor's offering). The currently unavailable options (like Hans' twinscrew and the "rebirth" of the Murf) are interesting, but they don't even have estimated dates of availability.

One of my criteria was the quality and integrity of the supplier. I supply services myself, and spend a considerable amount of money purchasing services and supplies from others. Drama from any quarter is something that I avoid, even if the material cost to myself is substantial.

Please, all parties concerned, show me the respect of not posting any further comments of any kind, implicit or implied, about a product that you don't currently sell, don't currently own, or haven't had substantial personal experience with as a neutral owner or neutral installer. And especially don't comment on a competitor's actions.

It very strongly discourages me from spending money on the product that you are recommending and it completely derails the thread.

I will request the thread be closed and entirely removed if there is even one more comment on this thread that has even the most subtle of disparaging implications about a product that the poster doesn't currently sell, own or have substantial personal experience with as a neutral owner or neutral installer.

Bulvot, reading your last post, I wanted to ask whether or not you would still like me to post about Sharktuner's and mailing "tuned" chips with supercharger kits. I said I would do that today, but I respect your comment above.

So, because you are the thread starter, I'm asking whether you want me to post my responses to those two items or not.

I believe it is pertinent to your stated objective "I do want to know what the currently available options are and what their objective benefits and detriments are."
But, its your call. Let me know.

Bulvot, I agree and am unimpressed when these threads start into the downward spiral and personal bashing.

Let me give you some history on my car. I purchased it from a guy that had disassembled to have it painted, then never really got back around to putting it back together. It would start and drive though.


Note - seats were in the car, but not much else. All the parts were included in the sale though.



Engine before it went to 928MS


It is my first and only 928 so I was a complete neophyte when it comes to the 928 and really wanted the car, but didn't have the time or knowledge to be able to mechanically get it put back together. Once I came to a verbal agreement on cost with the seller, I reached out to Carl at 928MS, whom I'd never met at this point. To someone outside the 928 shark tank, there weren't many people or companies I could approach with this type of project, but Carl's reputation, development work, and product offering made me believe that not only was it something he might be interested in, but also something he could handle, so we started those discussions.

Over the next few weeks, we laid out a plan for the tests he would do on the car to make sure it was an acceptable candidate for the higher cost modifications we were planning (compression tests, leak down tests, essentially general engine health). He knew that my goal once I received the car back was to have a reliable driver with all deferred maintenance up to date (filters, fuel accumulators, brakes, suspension, K-Jet system refurbish, etc) so I wasn't spending a bunch of time under it fixing things once it arrived.

He put together a parts and labor estimate as a guideline and once we agreed on the project scope and the estimated costs, I made a trip to Wisconsin to meet Carl, see the shop, meet his staff (essentially, him Gretchen, & Myles at the time), and finalize the project. I then moved forward with the purchase of the car (around May) and had it shipped directly from the seller to Carl using Reliable Carriers. As the process of the build went on Carl would call or e-mail keeping me up to date on what they were working on, photos of the work they were doing, things he discovered - both good and bad - made additional suggestions, and asked me for my preferences when there were options. Each week, I'd pay him for the parts he installed and the labor on the Invoices.

About 5 months later, the mechanical work and upgrades to the car were complete and I arranged for the shipment to me. That kicked off my portion of the project which was the interior, electrical upgrades, aero mirrors, fixing the way a few things were done (like the convertible top mounting), and essentially putting the car back together and making it cosmetically nice.

I finished my portion of the build the summer of 2015 in time to drive it back to Carl for the Z06 6-speed transmission upgrade, which I had opted not to do from a cost standpoint during the original build, but after driving the car with the OEM gearbox, I had to make that change. Interestingly enough, that gearbox and torque tube is now in Eric's (Hacker-Pschorr) parts collection I have had very few problems with the car over my 4 year ownership history - went through a couple fuel pump relays, but in general, the work Carl did has proven to be extremely reliable. He is extremely responsive via e-mail (my preferred method of communication) when I have questions on the car or work he did.

Carl, if you're mailing pre-tuned chips, then I would love to hear about that. Or, if you're recommending using a sharktuner in combination with your kit(s), then I would definitely want to hear more about that, too. If I were to get a kit that needs sharktuning, I'm torn on whether to buy a sharktuner and do it all myself, or find someone near me who is experienced and patient enough to do it with me.

Pete, thank you for sticking it out in this thread and taking so much time to provide details, background and impressions. I followed your thread when you first posted about your car and the level of work and attention to detail is astounding. You have something that is unparralleled, and that is a testament to you.

Your long term experience working with 928 Motorsports is encouraging and provides a factual data point that is very valuable. I've been involved with Porsches specifically and exotic to semi-exotic vehicles in general for about 30 years. There is always a lot of talk when it comes to modifications, but actual first hand experiences with solid facts are much harder to come by. The former is par for the course at get togethers, the latter is what I seek out when I'm deciding where to spend my time and money. Thank you for being so forthright with your experience. It is very helpful!

With respect to the supercharger, is there anything that you would do differently, or something that you would be certain to repeat, if you had to start over from scratch?
The only stuff I would do differently is the stuff I have now done differently,
  • like the secondary fuse box in the fender well for the heat exchanger fan, pump, lights, etc,
  • the cold air intake
  • would have done the Z06 trans on the initial build and saved myself the round trip drive to WI but that was fun with my son, so maybe wouldn't do that differently,
  • and I would have had Carl use the OEM friction discs as I do not like the Spec clutch, and with the upgrade to the dual disc clutch, probably didn't need more than that anyway (With your newer car and the potential to make a lot more power, you will need something other than stock)
and things like that, but I don't expect a vendor and shop like 928MS to spend the kind of time this stuff takes me to do, or to cut up a customer's car with a 4" hole in the inner fender, and I know I don't want to pay an hourly service rate for that type of work either. Plus, I believe one of the things Carl says about his kits is that they're completely reversible. I've been driving mine around with the supercharger removed these past few weeks while it was being upgraded by him (Impeller, belt, bearings, venting, etc).

It's neat to drive a 928 with the original power to see how it was in the 70s when released, but an extra 130 HP sure makes a difference

Bulvot. 928 Motorsports does not include a pre-tuned chipset with our supercharger kits. I am opposed to that business model, and the post I would make would be my reasoning for this decision.

As to the Sharktuner, I have posted many times that the Sharktuner works and does exactly what John Speake (the creator of it) says it will. Never had a problem with John. My only issue has always been those who expect it to correct all the shortcomings of the original 1985-era computers and engine management system. Many years ago I evaluated the Sharktuner in depth with John Speake as my guide, and we considered not only buying one for ourselves, but also being a dealer for them here in the States. I learned a lot about what it can and cannot do, and decided to pass on it. If I was to post, would explain how I came to that decision.

Late to the party, but since my name was thrown out there, my system is not an option at this time. I am building a very select first run, and after that, we will see if there is any demand for a second run. Given the trajectory of aftermarket, I think that is fairly unlikely.

When it comes to power adders, its all about driving style and environment and then budget/skill level/ for install and maintenance. Its also about how soon you need it.

Its tough to beat a stroker if you want to keep a stock appearance and similar to stock maintenance. Flip side of that coin is budget and time.

Ultimately, I think its probably better not to ask other peoples opinion here on the forum (a forever heated debate), but to dig through the archives and get a feel for the history and development of all these various projects.

Its not an easy choice, so take your time, do plenty of research, give some owners a call. I wish you the best in your journey.

I can honestly say that without Carl and 928MS I would not have been able to acquire this car, as I couldn't have done what he did, and without this project, Carl wouldn't have that new RV (just kidding Carl). I'm still a 928 neophyte compared to the other guys on here, but am learning and most importantly enjoying the car and meeting the 928 community that's on here and at Sharks in the Mountains each June - got to meet Eric, Murph, & Todd last year too.
Do you have any pics of the passenger side exhaust routing around the back? What size exhaust do you have?

I have the stock headers to a 928MS stainless Y-pipe to a Borla as the Borla is really the only thing available for the older cars. Though it's a dual outlet, both exit the driver's side.

This is all I have handy. I'll have to shoot some better under car pics when it's up on the lift next time for an oil change.
