16v timing question
When the cam marks on the passenger side is lined up, where should the rotor be pointing. I've had this thing apart so many times I'm sure that it's off. I just want to get it sorted before I pull the belt out.

Hi Van,
Im right there with you. Just putting mine back together also. I was going with Crank on TDC. Cam marks aligned and the rotor pointing to #1 spark plug. There is a mark on the distributor housing that Im assuming is the timing mark for the distributor. Here is a photo of how mine looks. The thing that really bothers me and tells me I may be doing something wrong its that the Distributor is almost maxed out on adjustment. Be great if any of those who know for sure could chime in and confirm whats what. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...58b1c36798.jpg |
Van,
I used this guide for setting the timing. Page 136 shows you where the rotor should be positioned with respect to the distributor housing. http://static.ibsrv.net/autocomm/Con...ber%202012.pdf |
Perfect
Thanks Nate |

Seems like my 82 was just like the picture on the document as well, but I also thought the adjustment was more centered..: Now I want to take it apart and look again...although it runs pretty darn good... |
Something to remember when installing the distributor:
The gears are helical cut. So as you push it down, the rotor will rotate forward. If you start out with the rotor pointed at the mark, it will end up off of it when it's all the way down. If you start with it one tooth back, it will end up about correct when all the way down. The exact location of the housing really doesn't matter (it's the rotor/cap position that really matters). I prefer to have it set so the adjustment is as centered as possible (Max possible adjustment in both directions). |
