DOT 5?
 

After looking at the specs for the brake fluid recommendations for my vehicles (that range from 1972 to 2017), I came to wonder if DOT 5 brake fluid can be used as a replacement for all others. Being that it is silicone based and not petroleum based, it should resist water accumulation better. Does it react with lines and calipers in a negative way? Can I flush them all out and replace with DOT 5?

The other problem I've heard about with DOT-5 fluid is that since it is not hygroscopic, any moisture that does get into the system tends to puddle in the low points, instead of mixing in the brake fluid. This can lead to rust in strange places.

Like Colin suggested,
The Dot 5 will damage your system by swelling the rubber bits,
and require a complete replacement of every rubber part that has been immersed by the DOT 4
