Should the porken tensioner be replaced with every TB job? I think I know the answer, and yes Roger's number is on speed dial. Thanks!

The audi timing belt interval on cars which use the same tensioner interval is 75,000 miles per Audi, although many enthusiast owners of older Audi V6's go with less as there have been timing belt failures at less than 75k miles

If you're paying someone to go in there, then the cost of the parts is low compared to the time/labour to get there, I'd just replace them and not worry. If I was doing the work myself, I'd probably just replace them too.

That is longer than I thought. Yeah, I'll have them replace along with the lasso WP just for peace of mind. Thanks for your response!

Yes you should replace the tensioner at the same time it comes with the new kit, let me clear that up they come with the vw, or Audi Timmy g belt kit
also the service I interval is 90k for the newer audits and 60k for the older cars.cheers

Should the tensioner itself be replace with each timing belt? I certainly hope not; I'd expect the tensioner to be good for the life of the car? The belt intervals should be the same, 2 years or about 30K miles? Why would anyone replace the tensioner at that interval? The stock tensioner isn't meant to be replaced at all with any frequency I know of?

That's the service interval on the belt as I understand. Is it incorrect?

That's what I understood as it always being

50k or 60k not really an issue as very few of our cars ever do that kind of mileage in less than 5 years. Most timing belts are changed because of the 5 year recommendation.
For the PKT I recommend changing the tensioner as you are in there and it is relatively cheap. Tensioner being the hydraulic part of the overall system.

I think we need to shore up our language here. The ENTIRE tensioner system is not replaced.

What is replaced:
1. The roller
2. Shock absorber thingie

The arm, bracket etc... is re-used.

Belts rarely fail, something else in the system fails & takes out the belt. The most failure prone part of every timing belt system is the rollers. Second is the seal in the dampener. So we replace those with every belt job.

I know some argue the dampener can be re-used, frankly it's not expensive enough to gamble with.

I think maybe you are mixing up the 944 and 928 timing belt intervals? As I understand it, the 944 interval is quite a bit shorter than the 928...

I've been a 944 owners since 1996 and even back then the belt interval to me was the same as the 928. Somewhere along the line that community got very paranoid and started to change belts on a much tighter interval.

Replace the Audi tensioner and roller it applies tension to. I agree with Roger on this. Going to do the same this year as I'm now 6 years on my belt, and 300 miles..
