OB Exhaust Manifold Updrade to 85/86

I’m preparing to install some 85/86 manifolds on my ‘79, and I’ve read through the threads posted here by those who have made the swap. I have one final question before diving in: does the engine need to be lifted to accommodate the removal and install? Looks like enough space without having to do so but wanted to double check.

No need to lift the engine. The old exhaust will not mate up though.

Besides this being a tough job, I read from others that the right side will mater up but the left side exhaust must be lengthened to mate up.
I seriously want this mod too so please share your findings with pictures and experiences.

On a 32v the eng will need to be lifted to clear the side braces from the inner fender to the lower Engine Cross member, you may have enough room on a 16v as the heads are not as wide ;)

It's the reverse, right needs to be lengthened.

I ended up taking out my engine when I did the swap because one of the studs broke.

For the gap on right side I had below made. Mine is RHD and I believe there is more space on LHD without the steering.

Brilliant, Anders! Thanks for sharing! I have a pair of S3 headers waiting for my '83 but haven't installed and one reason was that I wasn't sure I wanted to deal with the exhaust mismatch. But yours is a clever and clean solution!

Hupp, please keep documenting what you do. I'm following with great interest. Please make before and after audio recordings! Are you planning to do before and after dynos?

Anders, please share your thoughts/observations on the upgrade. How has it changed the driving character of the car, how did it change the sound? Do you feel any power improvement? Would you recommend doing the upgrade?

Cheers!
Rick

Recommend it 100%, car sounds much better and mine is an Euro S so the originals was a already too restricted. More HP?? Thinks so :-) Feels like it but it could be the sound :-)

Finally got around to installing the manifolds. The job is relatively straight forward, but a pain -- like all exhaust manifold jobs are. I also eliminated the cat converter and had a friend fab a custom y pipe, which is mated mated to my existing bola system. We also cut the Borla tips off and installed staggered polished stainless tips without that ugly bracing visible. As mentioned above, it feels better and the sound is awesome. Non droning, bellowing idle and screams once you get near 3000. Pics to follow soon.
