Default Manual Trans Mounts: Using 78 mounts in a later car

Throwing this out for comments.
I have a 83 S with a 79 manual trans setup. Its time for fresh transmission mounts. The 79 up mounts 928-375-045-16 are god awful expensive, over $200. each. The 78 mounts are two different widths but a fraction of the cost, under $100. each. The reason they are different widths is because the 78 have a different battery box setup. I have heard that the 78 mounts can be used in the 79 setup as long as I use the two wider width mounts ( 928-375-045- 13) on both sides.

Has anyone ever confirmed this ? I did some searching but did not come up with a conclusion.

Thanks.

Ok your on.
Please post pictures of the mounts you have,
and where they have to fit,
and order a set of what you think you need.

Maybe your going to teach everyone something here about trans mounts.

I havn`t pulled anything apart yet. I was hoping someone may have done this mount swap before. Before I purchase parts. The manual trans and cross member are stock 1979 parts. Those mounts are #928-375-045-16. Both sides are the same because the battery box mount was changed in 1979. The 78 has two different widths of the same mount. I will keep searching here. I swear I saw someone who did this mount swap.

I changed the thread title to better reflect what you are asking. If my 78 wasn't mothballed I'd climb under there and take some measurements compared to my 79 (which is already on the lift).

I sent a message to Mark Anderson, if anyone has a set of each lying around, he might. See what we can figure out with this idea.

Eric thats why I added the LOL.
This is an obscure request and without any pictures to go on it could turn into a cluster

I want to assist the OP but I dont recall the differences he is looking for ,
and adding pictures of the mounting area he has and the mounts will assist in a more accurate answer
Off the top of my head I dont know anyone that could answer this question from memory
Though Mark Anderson is a good idea where to start
For the OP look in the WSM as it details the changes that were made to the rear crossmember and trans mounts as the model progressed
This might include mounting designs.

Thanks for chiming in Guy. That was the post I remember seeing a while back. Now that you have some miles on the mounts, what`s your current opinion on the swap? They are certainly hefty mounts.

This is a great thread. I am in the market for new mounts and was lamenting that it was going to be $400 for a set. Damn, those are some BIG transmission mounts.

Unless you have bought the 928 375 045 13 already they are currently not available and maybe NLA.
